kirby Playstation 2 (games that require a Net connection) - Console stuff...

    Hey guys,

I have just started collecting for the PS2... small, but I'm starting. While at Frys yesterday, I picked up Shadow of the Collossus sealed for $20 (considering I've seen used copies everywhere for $20, I figured that price for a sealed copy was good), and some Metal Gear collection parts 1-3 for $30.

I don't even own a P2 yet... I'm still trying to figure out wth I'm supposed to get. I see that the latest revision of the P2 came out in '08? So I'm assuming I'm supposed to get that...?... hell if I know though. I read that the Slim models don't come with a HD and that some P2 games (and some P1 games for all I know) require a HD, so I'm assuming that means I'm SOL because I'm buying a P2 in 2010?...

Also, there was a really cool looking Hack n Slash game I wanted to grab (it was $20 sealed), but it said that I needed an Internet connection... wth is that all about Are there actually Console games that require net to be installed? Or even worse, require net constantly just to play the game?

I figured DRM and online authentication/verification was PC crapola only... am I wrong?

Lol, here I am starting up collecting games for newer consoles... I haven't even been at it for more than 12 hours and I'm already frustrated. I thought Console gaming was supposed to be easy (not trying to start anything, guys)... upon looking at more of the PS2 games, I noticed a good amount of them "require net".. what in the world is going on there?

Any info for my clueless ass (as far as more recent Console Gaming is concerned) is greatly appreciated.

I've found a seller who has a massive collection of PS1/PS2/Dreamcast games, so I'm soon to go to town.

Am I going to run into anymore "net required" type nonsense for PS1 and Dreamcast games?

    thanks, guys

(P.S.) I was reading about how most of the "servers" for PS2 online games aren't even functional anymore... is online gaming for a console only as stable as it's community? I.E. Starcraft is a very old game for PC and it still has LOTS of servers... is it the same for popular Console games? Only the strong stay around/etc?

I wouldn't recommend buying a game that requires net for the PS2, I'm assuming the servers are either dead, or soon will be.

I've only seen a couple that required net, and I only knew one person who actually had the internet adapter for his PS2.

I remember I was really bummed when I brought Metal Gear Solid 3 to my friend's house to try it online, the servers were dead by then

My PS2 didn't even have a hard-drive, I didn't know they even existed till now actually... It seems only 15 games can actually use it, and none are stated to needing one, so I personally wouldn't even bother with it (unless your planning to use homebrew or linux).

The only PS2 game that required a hard drive is Final Fantasy XI and it originally came with it's own hard drive containing files for it anyway.

The hard drive support was limited to only a handful of games, to kill load times and offer a few gimmicky features. (Full replays in some sports games.) In Japan it got some more support, but nothing major.

If you wanted to install linux with a linux kit for PS2. Again, the package came with it's own hard drive.

The only practical 'Useful' function of the hard drive was to use HDLoader/HDAdvance, which is actually unofficial bootleg software discs that let you boot a UI that will copy your legit games to the hard drive and boot them.

'Online required' games are fewer to come by, but they do exist, luckily the PS2 Slim has ethernet built in.
(The old PS2 needed a network adapter addon, which also carried the IDE slot for the HDD. So no Networking on old PS2 = No plugging in a hard drive.)

Sounds like Monster Hunter, that was a pretty good game for the time.

Thanks for the info! Only 15 eh... I saw about 10+ at Frys alone...

Rocking info I appreciate your time.

Guys, I don't plan on pirating 'anything', I will simply buy legit games, and play them.

Well, hopefully the loadtimes won't be too bad... I guess I'll get over being spoiled by my Q6600 and 88GT, lol... I'll take the PS2 and other similar Consoles for what they are and won't bitch (unless load times on Consoles are more than a couple mins, hopefully that's not the case).

    The question still remains though:

No sir, it was called something else... it looked like Diablo/etc...

The thing is... it didn't look like a MP game at all which is why I was highly confused. If the game doesn't have MP functionality, then why is Net required Or did I perhaps misread... maybe it was a MP game and if that was the case, do you guys think it was MP only with no SP mode?

Is it safe to assume that if I see a Playstation or other Console game that requires Net, that the game is MP based only with no SP?????

I googled, "console games that require net" in a bunch of similarly worded ways and got all kinds of hits on how to pirate Console games and make copies/etc/etc/blah... was lame.

thks a lot guys for the ultra fast responses, y'all rock

If you were talking about the games that have a small gray label saying "Online Broadband Only" That just means you would need a broadband connection to play them online. They still have the primary one player games you can play. FFXII is also the only game I can think of that required an online account. Most of your online Dreamcast games also had a one player scenario. Even Phantasy Star Online had a crappy one player game you could trudge through. As for games, I would recommend the Jak and Daxter, and God of War series'. The GOW games alone are worth owning a PS2 for IMO.

Yea, I've got several games with that label. It just means the game has an online mode you can play, like death matches and such. Oops! FFXI was the online one not XII.
