    I see the problem here.

    You need to watch youtube speed run videos.

    I'm the fifth fastest Sonic CD player there is, so I probably didn't explain enough when writing about it.

    As an author, I'm much better at explaining things I don't know about, because I then put ample research into explaining.

    Sonic CD, I feel I know so well I thought certain parts were common knowledge.

    Every single non boss Sonic CD act can be finished in under 30 seconds, except Tidal Tempest 2 (40 seconds)

    Every boss level can be finished in under 1:30, and many finished in under 30 seconds.




    The first time I played Sonic CD, I also felt the level design was lacking.

    I had to become a time attacker to truly understand the depth of the level design, and how truly awesome it is.

    Watch a speed run of the levels you don't like on Youtube.

    Especially Wacky Workbench, which I also thought was bleh at first, but then it turned out to actually be pretty cool.

    Well good art design can make an average/mediocre game good or even great, bad art can kill it...
    And this game is looking like it might fall into this category. The bigger complaints put it there, of course. (unless they modify it before release)

    I for one would not mind the option to play "classic" conic at all, or an all-sprite mode in general. The 3D modeled sonic looks really off in those videos... (I don't care if they use a classic styled sprite or one more like the GBA/DS games, but something 2D, with 2D animation)

    The thing is, that's if you're trying to go through as fast as possible, with the knowledge that all you need to do is get the special stages and emeralds for the good ending.
    So, that's playing a bit like a Sonic 2 fashion.
    If, however, you want to explore the levels and possibly get the good futures (Sonic 3/3&K is really fun to explore IMO), it gets to be a real PITA, getting future when you want past or vice versa, not being able to build up speed sometimes, but being able to too easily at others, etc. In fact, I think Sonic 2 is easier to explore too, even with the fast-paced nature.


    I like Sonic CD, but it's overrated IMO: I've seen the speedruns, and that's not how I usually play the games, I can to some extent, but I don't prefer to.
    Sonic 3&K is my favorite of the 2D games (well, I haven't spent enough time with the 8-bit games to tell). The save feature in Sonic CD is nice, but I'm not sure if it's as flexible as Sonic 3/3&K. (ie infinite continues and level select to facilitate getting the good ending once you've beaten the game)

    I haven't played far enough to know though (ie beaten it), but if it works like Sonic 3, that's a big plus in my book.

    And I thought "Sonic CD" was boring. The time travel stuff seemed like a gimmick to extend the gameplay.

    Interesting how they cycle through the color schemes though. The modern mario (or generally all incarnations following SMW) match the classic Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. colors. (well other than the blue hair/mustache, but that's a color limitation of the original hardware)

    But I agree, Mario's design went through more alterations than Sonic did in the first 5-6 years. (technically Mario Bros. was the first game featuring Mario as such -the character in Donkey Kong was named after the fact)

    Well, you've also got a much longer period of 2D only games for Mario than Sonic given the much older age.

    Why doesn't Sega try to please everyone at once, and include a lot of options like the killer hack Sonic Megamix. In Megamix you can choose whether or not to have a homing attack, for example. If there are all the options included, then everyone should be pleased.

    Plus Sonic 4 should have the option of classic Sonic or modern weird Sonic. Also they should have the option of switching b/w the modern graphics, and real Genesis graphics. You should be able to switch back and forth while you play, or just stick w/ your favorite, but it should be 2 complete games that are the same except one has modern graphics & sound, & the other is just Genesis graphics. See everyone would be happy.

    That and we all know this thread should be merged with the other one.


    I played NSMB recently with three friends...very fun.
    All three of them have seen the mine cart video, like Sonic more than Mario, and not one is going to buy Sonic 4.
