Default "Electronic Gaming Monthly" is back.....jack!!!

    http://www.egmnow.com/

Yeah, some of you may have noticed that they've begun churning out the digital issues of EGM (known as EGMi) since back in March, but the first print issue of the "new" EGM hit stores a week or two ago. Being a magazine collector, even though I've long given up on buying them regularly, I went to B&N and bought me this:

    (The Ryu cover)

Off the bat, some Pros & Cons:

    Pros:

    - This issue actually feels like its got some weight on it, which is the last thing I could say for the last couple of years of the original EGM.

    - Very high-quality paper's being used, which is what's probably making up that aforementioned great.

    - The layout is great and serviceable. Glad they did away with that "Space Invaders" crap from the 2003-2009 EGM (though an alien or two was snuck in).

    - A lot of the articles are good reads (especially the piece with David Jaffe), and they offer an EGM retrospective (which unfortunately has some errors that I pointed out) to boot, to get vets up to speed. Lots of great coverage on EGM's lifelong friend, Street Fighter, specifically SSFIV.

    Cons:

    - $6.99. I bought this mainly for collection purposes, to add it to my other "landmark" EGM issues (8th Anniversary issue (May 1996), 10th Anniversary issue (July 1999), 150th issue (January 2002), 15th Anniversary issue (May 2003.......very briefly mentioned in one corner of the cover ) and the last issue of the old EGM (January 2009), oh and sealed copies of the two "limited edition" EGMs with the Amano FF covers (September 2001 and November 2003), but won't be buying any more.

    - Page count is still low, about 100 counting ads, so we'll likely never see a monster-sized issue of EGM again.

    - As funky-fresh as the new EGM is, the halcyon days of print magazines are long gone, period.

Their new subscription model's pretty good though:

12 print issues and 52 digital issues for $24.99 -ONLY 40¢ an issue!
6 print issues and 26 digital issues for $14.99 - ONLY 47¢ an issue!

Hmm, one thing I don't get, howcome the sub that gives you more real issues, is cheaper lol(that won't last for long, I'm sure)?

Even though you get less issues, the real issues are more worth it, then paying for fake crap that should be free anyway.

I haven't found much of any use for modern video game magazines, I do try to collect some older game magazines, but the have a good novelty to them, now we have the internet, we don't need to but magazines. But if you want to go ahead!

I want to think this will bring back part of my childhood but then I remember that its about games I really don't care about. I will still try it out though.

That's my feeling as well, most of the games today are new school smut, not good games(let alone very good or a great), so game magazines have lost their appeal.

I was going through an EGM i still have from June 1992.....the thing that sets the mags from the glory days apart are the ads.....Seriously, those 16 bit ads were amazing....full of charm and the people in those ads were the epitome of the word nerd...

I felt the complete opposite. EGM was like almost 50% ads back in the 16bit prime-to-end era. I really disliked EGM because of that.

I didn't mind the 50%, because the magazine still have over 300 pages. It was kind of cool to see all of the import store ads and the unique devices that would eventually fade away to be long forgotten.
A Black Falcon: no, computer games and video games are NOT the same thing. Video games are on consoles, computer games are on PC. The two kinds of games are different, and have significantly different design styles, distribution methods, and game genre selections. Computer gaming and console (video) gaming are NOT the same thing."

    Two words:

I haven't been able to read EGM or GamePro with a straight face for years.

No, it's unbiased analysis. The only fanboyism is people who claim that Hyperstone Heist and Bloodlines are actually as good as their SNES counterparts.

Any magazine that doesn't have at or around 50% ads is skating on thin financial ice. 50% or so is the norm.

    RetroGamer rulez!

And the new GamePro is pretty good, I think. John Davison is focusing on features and not reviews/previews. Makes each issue interesting reading.

They should just say "fuck it" to making new magazines, and just reprint all the old ones!
