Yeah, some of you may have noticed that they've begun churning out the digital issues of EGM (known as EGMi) since back in March, but the first print issue of the "new" EGM hit stores a week or two ago. Being a magazine collector, even though I've long given up on buying them regularly, I went to B&N and bought me this:
(The Ryu cover)
Off the bat, some Pros & Cons:
Pros:
- This issue actually feels like its got some weight on it, which is the last thing I could say for the last couple of years of the original EGM.
- Very high-quality paper's being used, which is what's probably making up that aforementioned great.
- The layout is great and serviceable. Glad they did away with that "Space Invaders" crap from the 2003-2009 EGM (though an alien or two was snuck in).
- A lot of the articles are good reads (especially the piece with David Jaffe), and they offer an EGM retrospective (which unfortunately has some errors that I pointed out) to boot, to get vets up to speed. Lots of great coverage on EGM's lifelong friend, Street Fighter, specifically SSFIV.
Cons:
- $6.99. I bought this mainly for collection purposes, to add it to my other "landmark" EGM issues (8th Anniversary issue (May 1996), 10th Anniversary issue (July 1999), 150th issue (January 2002), 15th Anniversary issue (May 2003.......very briefly mentioned in one corner of the cover

) and the last issue of the old EGM (January 2009), oh and sealed copies of the two "limited edition" EGMs with the Amano FF covers (September 2001 and November 2003), but won't be buying any more.
- Page count is still low, about 100 counting ads, so we'll likely never see a monster-sized issue of EGM again.
- As funky-fresh as the new EGM is, the halcyon days of print magazines are long gone, period.
Their new subscription model's pretty good though:
2 print issues and 52 digital issues for $24.99 -ONLY 40¢ an issue!
6 print issues and 26 digital issues for $14.99 - ONLY 47¢ an issue!
