The battery in MCD is a rechargeable one, use of non rechargeable battery can result in an explosion....
Put a 4700µF cap on the power rail, see what happens... if your issues are gone or improve, you have to start changing caps.

thats just another something I can worry about... an explosion. shit. well, its a simpler solution... i can get a rechargable... I can believe I didn`t pick up on it.
i did however almost shit myself... the loading screen audio turned really crackly... and the psu started smelling funny. I checked the dc output and it was at 17.25 fucking volts. my input voltage was at a consistant 124.5v. thats 24.5v higher than what it should be for the adapter and 9.5v higher than what the step down converter should be at... but the power comming out of my wall is 245v so that is ok.
I am now on the thinking that it is the power adapter at fault... I bought it knowing that it already had disk loading problems.
I'm now worried I might have blown some components or even worse, an IC chip.
I only have some 22,000µF, 220µF and 47µF on hand... I would have to wait until after work tomorrow to get the 4700µF.
would any of them be worth trying?
22000µF will do even better ^^

so just on the end of the power connector is good? its a ceramic cap, so its not directional.
is there a way I can measure the ground in isolation? I want to see if it is very noisy?
bump
still need to know what you mean by power rail, weather its just on the negative and positive terminals of the DC adapter.
looks like im gonna solder it on the power connector...
if it devides the power by zero and destroys the world... I am blaming you.
I have some very sad news everyone.
tonight, I picked up a rechargeable batery and a new DC adaptor...
I tried it on the sega... and she is now dead. it doesn't even seem to boot up the bios as it doesn`t even recognise if the MD is out of region.
nothing stricked me as obvious to what is wrong... but I am also worried it could of been caused by static electricity. I dont have a bench... I was working on carpet.
I got a 9v at a 1.67amp DC adapter. unless the over current blew a fuse... if so... is there a fuse that I can find on it??? if not... what will be the first thing to go from over current?
from the sounds of it you're just making things worse for yourself
The fuse, had you of blown it is located just behind the DC input labled F1. It should (depending on model) look like a brown resistor.
Mine blew on an old MegaCD about 8 years ago, I bridged it and all was well.
If I was you, id try and short or replace the fuse if it doesn't work I think you need to give up on it! or its going to have a meltdown and cause a sub-atomic catalyst in your living room.
and if you don't have a bench don't do it directly on carpet man! lay some books or somin and strip of lino
good news... it was just a blown fuse. Bypassed at it started to boot up...
but the crackly audio kicked in straight away with the over voltaged power supply, so I tested my new psu with the megadrive and it works fine.
so I will switch them as the megadrive was a tiny bit less amps.
i had trouble measuring the amps with my multimeter though.
switching psus now... I will post progress after this short break
if its kicking out 17volts, I wouldnt use it on anything.
dispose of it because its only going to cause more problems.
22000µF capacitor cannot be ceramic, unless it is as big as a house... power rail = 5V power supply lines, the VCC and GND.. you stick a elecrolythic cap in the middle of them.
17V PSU is a bit too much on, the 7805 will get really hot then...

yeah, i chopped the cable off and switched it with the psu i was using for the genesis. 9v @ 1.5A
unfortunatly... I am having a huge day of fail today... I was just about to solder the new segaCD plug on my phony genesis psu... but i forgot to unplug it...
now my good psu is not putting out a volt and makes a strangle clicking sound...
so now I need another psu.
cant I just use a single psu 9v 3A for both devices??? or will that pop things if i plug one in before the other before I flick the on switch?
