the thing nobody talks about Shinobi is

like, the series split many years back, you know? like picture belmontvania & metroid like, they have the same roots but we all know what to expect from both

shinobi is far less talked about, but if you favor Revenge/3 you're not gonna enjoy shadow dancer as much, sadly
if you came up fro shinobi (arcade one)as part of a series you'll adore it. what im saying is, good people fuck with both but enjoy shadow dancer as the top 20 genesis game that it is

Yeah, IIRC it didn't review so well in a couple of the British mags of the time since people came to expect something more like the Super Shinobi, where of course Shadow Dancer stuck to it's arcade roots.

A proper sequel to Shadow Dancer in '92 would have been great though.

I love the game, the music epitomizes the late '80's early 90's 'Japanese ninja in the big apple' feel perfectly and is some of my favourite on the machine for sure.

IIRC it reviewed quite well in France. And magazines noticed the fact that the game derived from the arcade game rather than the RoS game.

I actually enjoyed Shadow Dancer more than Shinobi III. While the latter has better controls and graphics, I just liked the atmosphere more in Shadow Dancer. Also, Shinobi III had quite frustrating level design to me.

shinobi is good, hard but good. revenge of shinobi is a slow, but challenging methodical game. shinobi 3 is has the best move set but is booooring.

shadow dancer, is just good clean fun. same rules as shinobi but pumped up and i love that damn dog.

The problem with The Super Shinobi II (I refuse to call it Shinobi III, that's some Sega of America meddling there), is that the level design never quite takes full advantage of the stylish moveset you're given.

Shadow Dancer for the megadrive is my is my least favorite Shinobi. The open stage design kinda boring and slow. I think the bosses (in character design) of Shadow Dancer MD are pretty boring compared to the arcade Shadow Dancer. I prefer the Super Shinobi's. Revenge for the better game and Super Shinobi 2 aesthetically because it has the cooler bosses (in character design).

Actually to be truthfully honest the PS2 franchise of Shinobi and Nightshade is my favorite (best gameplay, best aesthetics). I rate Shinobi 3DS (should've just called it Super Shinobi 3) pretty high has well. The only minor complaint is the blocky graphics and the b-rate americano-fake-o-jap art direction for the official art. Shinobi X is also a favorite of mine haha. You guys must hate me.

Well I can't say I've played all those games, but I get the feeling Cyber Shinobi is in the right place on that list.

I will say I'm not a fan of Shinobi's newschool Hatori Hanzo look though, much prefer the tradititional one. Having said that I have heard good things about PS2 Shinobi's gameplay so I might pick it up at some point.

Shadow Dancer on the Genesis is a lot closer to a stealth game like Rolling Thunder 2 and 3 on the Genesis than Revege of Shinobi or Shinobi III. I feel more like a ninja playing Shadow Dancer.
