    Default Lego General Discussion

    ITT:
    We talk about how awesome Lego's are. I'm sure that a good amount of you guys still have some Lego's or at least pictures of old Lego sets or something. I would love to see some pictures of stuff you built. That's always interesting. OH! Stories too.

    To start off, what is your favorite Lego set?
    I'm pretty partial to Ice Planet myself. I got a whole bag full of Ice planet pieces and figures from a friend when I was little. I think I traded them for a GB game or something. Either way, I was pumped as hell. I made all sorts of Ships, forts, machines, and other silly things. Those chainsaws became a staple in all of my Lego Adventures. It didn't matter if it was Medieval times or Modern times, those damn chainsaws had to be in there. I wish I still had those pieces. All I have left is a couple handful of Mini figs and some accessories. Feels bad man.
    Also, who else was subscribed to Lego Magazine?

    God I miss the days when I'd play with Lego for hours at a time.

    Me too man.
    I recently visited some relatives in Maryland. They had like, 4 buckets full of Legos. I wanted to dig in an start building stuff so bad, but I didn't want to look like a weird manchild. Then, Raul smiled upon me. My relatives asked me if I was okay with babysitting some of the younger children. Obviously, I agreed.
    This was my chance to finally get at those legos. I asked the kids what they wanted to do for fun. To my surprise, they wanted to play with legos. We then proceeded to build Space Pirate ships with shark cannons and laser guns. I felt like such a manchild, but it was so worth it.
    I need to buy me some legos.

    I'll probably be back here to talk a ton about Lego, but for now I'll just list the basics.

    My first Lego set was from the Lego city road construction series. It had a front loading bucket tractor, a dump truck and a long utility truck. All these vehicles were about the typical size for mini-figure use. If you showed me a list of all the sets in that particular series, I bet you I could find it.

    Some of my favorite series were Star Wars (it was a big deal back then for me), Lego City, anything with robots or mechs and last but definitely not least, Orient Expedition. I had almost every set in the OE series. I even had the board game, still have it in fact. I also kept all the boxes for my OE sets for the longest, but eventually they were taking up a ton of space and my Mom had me throw them out. Most other Lego sets I had were from various other series which I didn't collect for.

    My biggest pride and joy of building out of spare bricks and parts was my Star Wars town/city, themed after Mos Eisley. It was a very respectably sized town with city-like features, not too big but not too small either. I had shops, homes, a bar, a neighboring Rebel Base which was owned by my older Brother and lots of little things here and there. I think at one point I had taken pictures of the whole thing, but I don't know if I saved the files to a computer somewhere or not. If I can find them, I am definitely posting them in here.

    I'll save some more Lego talk for later. Epic thread Karakasa.

    Hooray for Legos! I inherited a giant box of them when I was young, and it that was when it was just the "Town" and basic "Space" series. I'll never forget that satisfying crashing sound they made when I dumped them all out on the floor.

    After that I got briefly into the Medievil series when it came out, but I loved the Pirates series, which came soon after. With that series, the pieces started getting very specialized, which started leaving little room for imagination. I lost interest not soon after.

    But even now, I always look at those fantastic Star Wars sets and think to myself, "Hmmm..."

    @Guntz

    Oh man, I loved the Star Wars themed legos.
    I had this one set that I got as a gift once. It was some sort of small green vehicle with a guy dressed in brown who drove it. Do you happen to know what set that was? Anyways, did you ever try and build those alternate models they always had in the back of the instruction manual? I usually just made my own.

    Also, this set was one of my favorites:

    I loved that Dinosaur that came with it. If I remember correctly, they also made other Lego Dinosaurs. I was all over those things.

    @MrMatthews
    I never had the Pirates sets. One of my friends had the ship, and I was so jealous of him D:
    Lucky bastard.

    I have a huge box of them. I have to try hard to resist buying them in thrift stores.

    My favorite were the 'expert builder' and later 'technique' sets. Though a close second was the Space Lego sets. I had a two 5 gallon pals of legos... but I sold them to buy an NES :P

    My first lego set wan an 'expert builder' that I got at age 6. A very large car (don't remember the set #). I had no manual, but was able to build most of the car from looking at the pics on the box (engine too, IIRC they have a slice through view of it).

    The worst is when your using megablocks and legos at once, they just don't attach well at all.

    I've thought about doing this for a while, I don't have enough bricks though

    Was it perhaps one of the Speeder Bike sets? Probably one with Luke Skywalker in his brown outfit instead of a Scout Trooper like this boxart:

    I don't recall ever making anything according to the alternate designs. They did often look pretty weird yet at the same time cool though.

    Now, there's some other things I'd like to discuss:

    Did anybody here get their Lego sets featured in Lego Magazine? I always thought the fan creation section of the mag was one of the best features. The sets showcased often ranged from the simple and straight to the complex and awesome. I can't remember if I ever had a set featured in it, but I have a feeling one of my older Brothers got one of their sets in.

    On a related Lego subject, how many of you were familiar with the various Lego video games? Back when I was a kid, Lego and video games went hand-in-hand so Lego video games were pretty awesome. Here's the old Lego games I had back in the day:

    Lego Island 2
    Lego Land
    Lego Racers
    Lego Alpha Team
    Lego Rally (sp?) (GBC)
    Lego Racers 2 (GBA)
    Lego Island 2 (GBC)

    If anyone wants to further discuss these games, feel free to speak up.

    @Tomaitheous:

    I believe the series you were thinking of was "Lego Technics". I always thought those sets were really cool, but unusually complicated when they appeared in Lego Magazine.

    I used to build lots of stuff with Legos on my bed but sadly I don't have anymore. I used to build Lego PC to pretend it works and I played Alley Cat on it

    I'm looking into rebuilding my Pirates collection but the asking prices are ridiculous even if it's well-made plastic. Lego had to sell out and make all this licensed fluff because parents weren't buying their kids Lego, or toys in general, as much as they used to..

    Anyone tried making stop-motion animation using Lego?

    @bohokii Well that's one fancy robot! Does it really transform? Impressive if you ask me!

    Lego City was the best. I remember getting a catalog circa 1991 and just staring at the city they had built for pictures...all I could do was dream about designing and building my own miniature Lego City.

    I never really got into the Pirates/Space/Knights stuff, some of it was too unrealistic.
