    Default Losing your job.....

Just trying to find some encouragement from anyone who is unemployed or facing unemployment.....My employer just told me that there is a very strong possibility that they will shut down within the next 3-12 months......

At 36, the thought of trying to find something else and starting from the bottom is very frightening.....If its possible to be lucky in this situation, I guess I am since I have some time to find something else.....Its just very scary considering the job market and not knowing what kind of pay I will be able to find.....

I guess my game buying will have to be placed on hold or severely cut back....I'd like to hear from some of you in a similar situation....How has job finding gone? Better or worse than expected?

Ive been in this situation once or twice before I found my current profession.

The worst thing is sitting back and pretending its either not going to happen OR you have all the time in the world after all 3 - 12 months sure sound like a long time.

    My best advice I can give you is as follows;

Start building a killer CV get somebody with with decent communication/literacy skills to help you knock up a sweet CV.

Start job hunting ASAP, first apply for positions which do interest you! and adjust your CV accordingly. I used to have one CV for computer engineering another for Mid-level Managment another for Retail and another for consulting! make sure each has all skills adjust to better suit the enviroment for what your applying for.

Sign up at a couple of Agencies! these fuckers are slow so sign up ASAP. let them know fully your current situation.

nows the time to think of what direction you want to go in life...don't start contemplating travelling the world just think if you can or want to move sector with your skill set.

I don't know about the states but in the UK you should be given time off to attend interviews! take note using a ledger and keep a list of every job you've applied for and keep note of there phone numbers and what the job entails! this helps organizing things so If one calls you out the blue you already have the details at hand....its trivial but not alot of people do this.

like I said the best thing you can do is start hunting ASAP!

I work on a self employed basis..I recently had to find another job and it took me about a week! its just keeping the right contacts open.

I hear ya, Runback. I've been out of work since early February, and before that all I was doing was this miserable factory sweat-shop through a temp agency. I could spend a couple of paragraphs on My sob story, But I'm actually very close to getting a temp job at a local electronics manufacturer. It'll be a shit job for minimum wage in a terrible company, but it's still a pay check. It's like the guy above says, just keep searching, keep putting those job app's out, and hound the local staffing agencys relentlessly. Also, get in contact with whatever friends/social contacts You have. In this crappy job market You may have better luck getting into a new company through a friend then with just a job application.
Of course, bribing a potential employer with beer and hookers may not be a bad idea, ether.

    Good luck.

Begin your new job search pronto. Don't wait to see "if they really mean it". When a company gives you a memo like that, it is most likely bound to happen.

Get a professional resume in order quickly and get it out to prospective employers in your area. I was out of work 11 months last year and only found my current job because I worked for this company 20 years ago and they happened to remember and like me.

Be prepared to possibly relocate, depending on the job prospects in your area. I had to do that twice over the past ten years.

Finally, lean upon the Lord and He will lead you to the right job. Best wishes.

I have been uneployed forever it seems. Living off ebay is bit freighting. I fear I am never to find a job in this town. My last job was shitty , I just worked during school, but still it does not help to have to tell people I got fired. Employers are really taking advantage of this lousy job market. I have saw one listing that basicaly for what amounted to the person who cleans the shit off the floor at the Vet's office. They wanted a resume for a job cleaning shit and piss off floors. My wife has not worked in five years thanks to being here on a visa. She finally got her right to work card but sixth mouths later still no luck and she has been much more diligent than myself.

I have noticed many places around here hiring three types of people

    1. Who ever will work for minimum wage, replacing who ever was laid off before.

    2. Over educated working for not much more. This person was in charge of something, the last one I talked ran an engineering project and was canned. I have meet a few at places like the local Checker. Its really depressing.

    3. Call me a chauvinist I don't care. I am seeing lots really cute girls now working at places that never were at two years ago. All I can figure is that they think "Cute girls will bring more business " I see them at places the checker with the over qualified guy.

I think its time to move somewhere else.

Start looking from now on, and very important; start learning an skill or something, since being good at something helps alot, you name it, and if you have access to the internet you can find much info in learning something.

Well, yeah, try to get rid of your games on ebay and Amazon, and buy a flash cart or use emulation for your gaming.

Otherwise I agree with what others have said: Start looking for a new job immediately and don't waste valuable time.
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

Don't know where you live, but if you're due some redundancy it may not be all bad.

I was made redundant last year about christmas time, but I'd had ample warning of this so was straight out on the job hunt. I found a new job that paid somewhere near what I was getting paid previously and I got a large redundancy payment, so If anything I'm better off because I got a lump sum of money that I didn't need to spend '

Just get searching now though, the earlier you can line up a job the better. Plus there'll be more people with your skills going for the same jobs I presume when your company closes, they may be your work mates now, but soon they'll be your competition.

Most of all keep calm and focused, If you let it worry you you could end up with depression or something and that won't help the job hunt.

As much as I love the military and talk about it like it's great, it's not immune from people being handed pink slips and getting discharged early, or forced to be retired earlier. Happening right now in my branch of service.

My enlistment is up next year and I am at a crossroads on what I want to do. Not really a good idea or time to get out, but I want to do 20, either reserve or active and the reserves are looking good...but what to do in civilian life? Hmm.
The smell of scorched oil hangs in the air as a premonition of danger, while the engine gloriously shouts its war cry...

Throughout history, suspicion has always bred conflict. The real conflict, though, resides in people's hearts. This conflict has just begun.

I guess i'm lucky, for lack of a better word, that I have this advance notice....sometimes it feels like a death sentence though.....looking at the jobs that are available is pretty depressing......

Trying to keep my head up but it looms like a shadow over everything i do.....

The world is run by a select few (no not Bill Gates) and it's now decided that middle classes are expendable. This isn't a self-correcting recession, nor a result of decades of consumerism and decadence (that will come at a much later time)

It's not all doom and gloom though, things will likely continue to improve, but the bubble has finally burst. Too bad I can't contribute constructively to the original request however!
I agree with you, too bad the truth sucks, Now if your awesome avatar guy can give me a government living unit with a soviet government job and a master system clone then we'll be in business! BTW what happened to your cool sig you had? i liked that.
