Sega Master System
Sega Genesis
Sega Saturn
Sega Dreamcast
Sega Game Gear
Geez, I don't even remember making this thread!
This is particularly difficult for me. I own more Genesis games than any other Sega platform, including add-ons, but that is just because Genesis games were so danged cheap over the last decade. I think my total game play time would be tied up equally between the Master System, Genesis, Sega CD, 32X, Saturn and Dreamcast.
The only way I could possibly settle on one platform is if I included the Sega CD and 32X library with the Genesis. Looking at things like that, the Genesis-Sega-CD-32X is easily the best platform among Sega, if it doesn't seriously challenge anything Nintendo ever made. I don't tend to focus on that aspect, but the libraries happen to reflect the same value in this case.
"... If Sony reduced the price of the Playstation, Sega would have to follow suit in order to stay competitive, .... would then translate into huge losses for the company." p170 Revolutionaries at Sony.
"We ... put Sega out of the hardware business ..." Peter Dille senior vice president of marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment
"Sega tried to have similarly strict licensing agreements as Nintendo...The only reason it didn't take off was because EA..." TrekkiesUnite
Just like Khan, I'm all about the Genesis.
After that, it's the DC and the Saturn. I've never played the Master System (don't hate me for my ignorance). One of these days I might pick up a power base. I always hated the Game Gear. I thought the screen was awful, the d-pad was awful, the feel in your hands was awful, and the graphics and games underwhelming. I'm a Lynx guy![]()
1) Genesis
2) Saturn
3) Master System
There's a vast library of great games for the Genesis, a nice number for both the Saturn and SMS. The Game Gear I'd like to own, but don't really care for it. But the 3 systems here just have so much for them that's playable, but the Genesis has the most affordable library IMO.
A friend of mine finally decided I needed a Master System about a year and a half ago maybe two, so he got me one. I built a library of 21 games for it in a matter of about a year, since then locally has been a bust for SMS finds since the one bunch I bought a good while back.
Last 2 games I got for mine was a complete Bubble Bobble from said friend, and a friend in the UK generously gave me his copy of Sagaia (also complete). If you haven't played either on SMS, you owe yourself that. Bubble Bobble on NES may have more fans, but the SMS Bubble Bobble is so much truer to it's arcade big brother. Plus it's much much longer, as for Sagaia, it has less zones than any other version, but it still turned out very very nicely. I'm still lacking the original Wonderboy though, hopefully not for much longer. Same with Rastan, I'd like to get away from playing it emulated , though I do have those Taito PS2 collections released here in the US, and the 4 from Japan, but I'm a sucker for arcade ports for some reason, SMS version would fit the bill nicely.

1 - Saturn
2 - Genesis
3 - Dreamcast
4 - Master System
I really haven't played the Master System, except for Phantasy Star and Hang-On using the Master converter. I haven't played a Game Gear at all.
A Black Falcon: no, computer games and video games are NOT the same thing. Video games are on consoles, computer games are on PC. The two kinds of games are different, and have significantly different design styles, distribution methods, and game genre selections. Computer gaming and console (video) gaming are NOT the same thing."
I have the strongest feelings for the SMS and several of its games, but I also can't think of the Genesis as being completely separate since it plays them too. I really love the Saturn and it was the last console that felt as special as previous generations (the Dreamcast was great, but didn't have quite the same feeling).
If I must rank them, I'd go:
Genesis/Sega-CD/32X/PBC
SMS/GameGear
Saturn
My favorite would be the Saturn with the Dreamcast and Genesis/CD/32X pretty much tied for 2nd place. I only rate the SMS in third place because I don't have much experience with it.
Genesis all the way for me, nothing else comes even close. Dreamcast is second place but the difference between how much I like those 2 is immense.

The Master System scene must feel very different in the US, I've amassed over 100 games for my Master System without even trying, the games are just so cheap and common in Britain that I never had much trouble running into them on my searches of 2nd hand stores and boot sales. Though it is getting harder to find them in the wild in the last 5 years though, I think all that stuff is probably going straight to Ebay these days.
I'd guess in the US these days SMS probably feels more of a quirky/rare item, in Britain its more of a cheap and cheerful machine whose games are fairly common.
