    Default Neo Geo Questions

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neo_Geo_(console)

I see that they had a fast processor. Motorola 68000 processor running at 12MHz compared to the Genesis at 7.67 MHz Besides the huge price tag of the system, the only thing that they seem to release for the most part is Fighters. You would think they could make some real SUPER SONIC games.
Maybe here is the issue?(taken from wiki)

"Unlike most other video game consoles of its time, the Neo Geo did not use tilemap background layers. Instead, it relied exclusively on drawing sprites to create the background. Sprites are vertical strips which are 16 pixels wide, and can be 16 to 512 pixels tall. By laying multiple sprites side by side, the system can simulate a background layer. The system can draw up to 384 sprites on the screen at a time, and up to 96 per scanline."

This could have made it hard to make sidescrollers and well, most other games as it would have required more work to produce never ending backrounds needed.

Sidescrollers worked fine on the system. The reason you had fighters was that the Neo was primarily an arcade machine, the early 90's were dominated by fighters, and SNK was good at making them. The early Neo games had a bit more variety.

Silly thread, the Neo was an arcade system and therefor it was just not viable to have Sonic like games on the system.

and SNK knew that, so we got about 9000 fighters and 6 metal slug games.

oh and.. some weird puzzle stuff.

Too bad there weren't more racers for the Neo. Only a few were made.

It's got Neo Drift Out! What else do you need?

Well, maybe a sequel that takes more than 5 minutes to clear and has more than 6 tracks.

I've got a Neo Geo CD and Neo Drift Out is easily my favorite game. Best 2D racer ever, period.

The Neo Geo has a lot of non-fighter games. There are some awesome shmups, the Metal Slug games, Top Hunter was a great, and gorgeous, action/platformer. Plus it has the original Puzzle Bobble. The sports games are all top notch (and have aged well due to the lack of licensing and rosters).

I don't like fighting games and I've gotten a lot of enjoyment out of my NGCD. Graphics and sound easily outshine the Genny and SNES. And the controllers (the pad and the stick) are excellent.

It would have been nice to see more shumps, beat'em ups/hack and slash, and racing games. Maybe more action platformer like Strider and more run'n'guns.

more third party support wouldve been awesome.

just imagine a mega man, or castlevania

since the neo geo wasn't in the price range to compete with the genesis or snes, sega and nintendo couldve ported over some of its arcade games as well.

I don't play old stuff for nostalgia, I play old stuff because the games are better.

Again, it was an arcade platform primarily, and Capcom, Sega, and even Nintendo all had their own arcade platforms at the time.
