Christuserloeser, we've been over this before, and yes, that's all to do with Moore, but nothing to do with previous MS dealings. Moore's actual motivation could be a number of things as I said already. (including several different possible perspectives tied to the Xbox -including thinking it was going to be th ebig thing to jump on and Sega had better do it as fast as possible)

SoJ always had ultimate control over what occured, and from soem of Moore's quote, it seems more like Japan had already made up its mind (which makes sense given the very limited Japanese markat share they had in Japan -a constant 3rd behind Sony and Nintendo from 1998 on -though the Xbox was far worse) and that it simply came down to Moore to decide how to handel the western discontinuation.

In honesty, it didn't make all that much sense, at least in hindsight as Sega seemed ill prepared to make an abbrupt leap to 3rd part and floundered for quite a while bouncing from console to console without consistent multiplatform development and increasingly alienating their previous PC market.

Got to go with 1993. This was the year we got Shinobi 3, Toejam and Earl 2, Sonic Spinball, and Gunstar Heroes. GUNSTAR HEROES!

The year Special Champion Edition was released. I remember around that time Sega was pretty hot in the market and strong competition for Nintendo.

Edit: 1993! Was also the year the port of Mortal Kombat got released w/its arcade authentic fatalitys and superior gameplay.

91, 92 and 93 were all great years for the Genesis, but the fact that both halves of Sonic 3 & Knuckles came out in 1994 makes it the automatic winner for me.
It may no longer be the `90s, but there is still time for Klax.

It's a toss up between '92 and '93 for me, but I went with '92 because of SoR2 and Sonic 2 alone.

1992 got Sonic 2, Shining Force, and Streets of Rage 2
1993 got Ranger-X, Disney's Aladdin, and Gunstar Heroes
1994 got Dynamite Headdy, Sonic 3 & Knuckles

It's hard for be to pick between '92/'93/'94, but I'll go with 1993.

1992 and 1993 are tied atm.

I must say, I feel that this is a pretty accurate reflection of the peak (in general) of the Genesis as a console.

Even though this thread is three years old I'll bit. I guess I would have to to say I would have to say 91 for me though it would really have to be late 90 to 91. It when I fell in love with arcades and my NES was real starting to seem crappy to me. The Genesis seemed so much different then the Nintendo offerings. Most importantly just being different. The NES had become so long in the tooth. Altered Beast doesn't seem like much now but many of its little graphical details, like the spin of the Bear that was more than just a brown circle blew me away at the time. The music of Revenge of Shinobi and the leaves blowing around were incredible. Playing Golden Axe at home was amazing. The first time I saw Castle of Illusion was another moment.I remember even my friends computer nerd Dad was impressed. That really was great time to walk into a video game store and see TG16s, Neogeos, Lynx's and Segas on the shelf. They were the future and the SNES was still no where to be seen.

I think 91 was sorta of the peak with Sonic and Streets of Rage. By then Sega was no longer a joke to most gamers. They really made Nintendo look stupid at the time with those games. I think if Sega had just concentrated on making nothing but kicks ass games instead of add ons things might have been different for them.

The one thing that impressed me more than the graphics, was hearing the music using a pair of cheap earphones! In terms of impressive graphics, it would be the design of the stage bosses. The first stage had Aggar tossing a flurry of regenerating heads at you! It was such an interesting creature to lay witness to. It set the stage for future battles with other odd looking bosses to contend with ... Octeyes, Mouldy Snail, Crocodile Worm, and finally Rhinoceros-Man! Whomever designed the sprites did an excellent job. Seeing those images caused my imagination to run wild and wonder what other games were available for the console.

It's really hard to pin point the best year for the SEGA Genesis but looking back it would definitely be 1991-92! The hype around the console in ads and on television were at it's peak during this time and it was only quelled when the SNES made it's debut later that year.

Sonic 2 and Streets of Rage 2 were released within like a month of one another in the U.S., weren't they?

I made my choice based upon the games; what good is a console without the games? So many good years but I chose 1993. So many good games were released that year:

    Dune: Battle for Arrakis
    Eternal Champions
    Flashback
    Gunstar Heroes
    Mortal Kombat
    Mutant League Football
    NFL 94 starring Joe Montana
    NHL 94
    Prince of Persia
    Ranger X
    Robocop versus Terminator
    Rocket Knight Adventures
    Street Fighter 2
    Super Baseball 2020
    X-Men

Also, I think the awesome six-button controllers were released in 1993. They didn't just add buttons, either, they made the D-pad ever better than before. Only the Saturn has better controllers!

Actually, if I could pick a twelve-month period instead of a calendar year, I'd pick roughly Spring 1993 to Spring 1994. Then my list would also include Battletech, Dragonball Z, NBA Live 95, Virtua Racing, and Zero Tolerance.

Besides 1993 and 1994, I think 1990 was a great year for Genesis. Cyberball and John Madden Football were released plus Herzog Zwei was already available at a reduced price.

I couldn't tell you. I didn't know streets of rage 2 existed until a few years ago.

I'm fairly certain Sonic 2 was November 1992, and SoR2 was December 1992. Late '92/early '93 was awesome for so many reasons.
