Moonwalker
"Fires of purgatory, coalesce and incinerate my enemies."
Ha! After all I had heard about that game, it ended up being one of the first ROMs I loaded onto my flash cart to play. It's so god damn bad that it's awesome in a way.
"Oh no, a rat!" *trips and falls over dead*
"Oh no, slightly uneven pavement!" *trips and falls over dead*
Fucking awesome.
Art Alive
Heavy Nova
Slaughter Sport
Strider 2
Simple. DJ Boy.
Cruise by Diskman Presents: filled with geektastic classic gaming goodness!
by my personal experience:
Altered Beast (arcade translation)
Populous (strategy, computer translation)
Herzog Zwei (strategy genious)
Revenge of Shinobi (fucking best game ever at time of release)
Ghouls & Ghosts (next fucking best game ever. moody yet colorful graphics. beautiful BGM)
Thunder Force III (shmup what?!)
Super Monaco GP (psuedo scalling racer, with digitized babes in swimsuits)
Gunstar Heroes (next level)
Landstalker (speaks for itself)
Phantasy Star IV (II didn't impress me as much as 1 did, III was just whack, IV brought the goods)
oh, and of course, Sonic the Hedgehog (speed, simplicity and kickass music)
edit:
now that I looked at other's lists, have to add:
Streets of Rage (best BGM ever at that point in time)
Strider (whoa!)
Shining in the Darkness (what I wished Phantasy Star II would have been)
and I sort of have to mention
Alex Kidd In the Enchanted Castle (most Japanesey game I played (at the time) since Milon's Secret Castle)
Mickey Mouse Castle of Illusion (closest to the Mario-style gameplay we got at the time, and all around A+ production)

Hmm...
Castle of Illusion, pretty much has it all, it has some great music, great sound effects, great graphics, not to mention it's long enough to complete in one sitting, but not too short, and it's just about enough challenging, excellent game really.
Quackshot, same as the above, pretty much fantastic in all areas really.
Ghouls & Ghosts, near enough arcade perfect except for the music, extremely challenging and addictive.
Streets of Rage 2, first one is a classic, this one just shows up Final Fight at it's own game, also, SOR1 and SOR2 easily have some of the best music in a 16-bit game ever.
Ecco The Dolphin, not sure what needs to be said really on this one
Revenge of Shinobi, again, doesn't even need words.
Sonic 2, it's Sonic really.
Without a doubt the sonic series, specifically sonic 1-3, made the system that was able to compete with the SNES and Mario.![]()
Two other games that had a positive impact, especially in the early days before sonic were Altered Beast and Golden Axe.
While both have not aged well, both were graphically superior to what the master system and the Nes were coming out with during that time. Made the Genesis really stand out.
