The Ultimate Debate: Model 1 AC Adapter

With all the different Sega AC adapters that are being shuffled around through second hand stuff, there is some confusion about which adapter goes with which Sega product. Searching on the web and other forums didn't really helped me up to this point...

I have the Genesis Model 1, revision 1.5, and my ac adapter is model "1602-1". The adapter is 10V 1.2A and the console needs 9V 1.2A. Is it the right adapter?

Am I going to fry my genny? Please give your informed input.

MK-1602 or MK-1602-1 -- Sega Genesis 1, Sega CD 1 and 2. This power supply may also work with Master Systems -- they are very similar to SMS power supplies, which are model 3025. The MK-1602 is 9 volt DC 1.2 amp, the MK-1602-1 10 volt DC 1.2 amp, and the 3025 9 volt DC 1 amp. All have the same kind of plug. I'm not sure why they have two different models of the Genesis 1/Sega CD power supply, one outputting 9V and the other 10V, but either should work the same. I've got a 1602-1, it works the same as a regular 1602.

I have also seen people use the 1602 and 1602-1 on a Model 1 with no problem. But NEVER use an NES AC Adapter. I've heard horror stories about that. Or those 3 in 1 AC Adapters.

Just as long as you have the voltage and polarity correct, you can have amperage OVER whatever the requirement is and the device will only pull the amps it needs.

Use whatever you want just as long as it's 9v and 1.2+A.

A model 2 Sega CD-AC adapter fits the Model 1 Genesis as well, as I found out by pure chance

You can use SMS bricks aswell, but they'll get quite not, but not hot enough to melt and die in a spectacular way ^^

I always thought the number after 1602 was the region code, 05 for UK style plugs for example. MK 1602 was sold for use on the SMS, GG and MD although the adapter came packaged in Game Gear livery.

I actually power my sega cd model 2 with a 3 in 1 adaptor. I couldn't get a 1602 adaptor anywhere so I had no choice. It works absolutely fine.

Hmmmm...I know back in the mid 90s a couple of my buddies had one and it fried their Genesis. Dunno if it was a cheap one of not. But I do know that they were pissed. And based on that I won't use one unless it has good solid reviews. But that's just my preference.

ive been using a SMS model 3025 with my Model 1 for years now, before that i used a old APPLE STYLE WRITTER 1 PRINTER DC adapter with my unit. my Model 1 VA2 is a dirty girl, doesn't matter what you stick up her, she'll perform flawlessly.

That could be right, but I'm not sure if it is, because I have,

and they are all American adapters. It has been a while since I have looked at them, but I believe certain ones were 10v and others were 9v.

I don't think it will matter which one you use on which consoles, because all the consoles have internal regulators in them. I believe someone said that you could use up to 25volts on the genesis. The only side effect would be the regulator IC would get very very hot!
