Default How did you first hear about the Genesis/Mega Drive?

The very first time I saw a Sega Genesis was in the 1990 Sears Christmas Catalog. It blew my 8 year old mind away. the screenshots made the NES look like dog poo. I had to have one. unfortunately I didn't get one until 1993. but at least I got one.

here's a scan of the catalog page I was talking about

I had it back in 1997 (I was 3). I enjoyed it so much...

I saw it in a Lionel Play World advertisement. I was 9 and remember thinking, "why did Sega make another system. They already have one?" . Then I played Golden Axe in the arcade and wanted one.

I saw a lot of Sega Genesis commercials on tv, and just had to have one, and finally did in Christmas 1994.

First heard about it from a friend not long after it came out in '89, then made it my mission to get one for Christmas that year (I succeeded).

Walked into Toys R Us in August of 89 ready to get an NES when the guy there was like NOPE you will love this more and introduced me to what would be my very first console.

Back in the late 90s, I was given a new PC game to play, called Sega Smash Pack Vol. 2. I'm not sure if I knew it was a Genesis compilation specifically, but I understood that they were made by some company called Sega and these games were really fun! Two of my favorite games on the disc were Shining Force and Super Hang-On. Others that I thought were fun were Vectorman 2, Kid Chameleon and Sonic 2.

Didn't know anything about the Megadrive, until 1993 or 94 (I forget) - my dad won one, from one of those phone quiz competitions that were always advertised in magazines, etc. It arrived at the door all shiny and new, accompanied by a Mega CD console in similar new shiny state, and a small boxful of brand new games. Fortune favoured the me, on that occasion Still have those consoles (and some of the games) too.

in 1998 my dad got us a SMS2, and sometime later I saw one friend having a broken Sega which happened to be MD. I got that MD for myself and later on I got carts etc. for it. Between getting the MD and stuff for it, I discovered emulation and I could play osme Sonic3 well before I could on my MD

I knew about the Genesis coming out in '89, but I was relatively young at the time and didn't have $190 for a new system. I remember that it was actually Ghostbusters that convinced me to buy the system. I saw a screenshot in a magazine or catalog (not sure which) that showed Peter Venkman shooting at a ghost. I thought, wow, that actually looks like Bill Murray! After that, I sold my NES and all my games, borrowed what I lacked from my parents, and soon had my own Genesis.

Back in early 92 my uncle had a Mega Drive with Mega Games I and Sonic the Hedgehog wich were pretty new back then and I played with it a couple of times. Later that year I bought it from my uncle and from there on just I fell in love with the system and Sonic.
At some point later I found a little kids magazine wich advertised Sonic 2 and I had to get this game immediately so I asked my mother to look for it in the local video store and they actually had it.

I didn't read any magazines and internet wasn't even a thing to dream about yet, so the only way to learn about new games was from friends or the rare TV commercials. Just like I learned about Sonic 2 from out of nowhere I learned of Sonic 3 when the commercial came up on TV. Like before I asked my mother to look for it in the video store and once again I got lucky. Those times were the best. It was just magical.
