Sonic Jam gets all 4 Sonic games with all Genesis functionality (Lock-On!), new difficulty modes, Spin Dash and rolling clouds in Sonic 1, a 3D World, pictures, videos, and a save feature. On the flip side the sound is changed and doesn't sound as good as the original Genesis games.

    I'd say they're about even.
That game was actually released, and is in fact the real Super Mario Bros. 2. It just wasn't released in the US and the UK because they thought it was too hard if I remember correctly.

It wasn't released in the US. Therefore it was unreleased

And besides, if SMB2J had come out here, I don't think it would've gotten that great reviews, considering it's the EXACT same thing as SMB1. Releasing it as Lost Levels in All-Stars and releasing Doki Doki Panic as Super Mario Bros. 2 here was a much better move for Nintendo that helped the franchise progress.

Well, yeah, it certainly builds a bridge visually to SMB3.

Still, kinda like if they'd asked Sonic Team to redesign Ristar with Sonic characters.

But yeah, at the time it might have been a clever move. Also wasn't SMB2J an FDS exclusive in Japan ?
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

I'm pretty sure it also had a cartridge release, most FDS games in Japan had a Cartridge Release at some point.

And Unreleased in my mind is never released anywhere, like Sonic Xtreme, Saturn Shenmue, or Saturn Virtua Fighter 3. Super Mario Bros 2 was actually released, it was just a Japan exclusive for a while.

SMB2J doesn't have an official cartridge release. There are plenty of games on FDS that didn't get a cart release in Japan (Falsion, Gyruss, Vs. Excitebike, 3D Hot Rally, the completely different FDS F1 Race, that Kiki Kai Kai game, Metroid, Kid Icarus, Nazo no Murasame, the two FDS Eggerland games). A few, including SMB2J, were ported to bootleg cart unofficially, though.

They released Super Mario Bros 4 here in the West as just Super Mario World. go figure.

Just a thought: were the cheat codes scattered around 'Sonic World' unlockables, or there by default? I seem to remember unlocking them by progressing through the game.

The muffled sound kinda kills it for me but da_shocker already summed up what's great about it. Plus the parallax (such as in Spring Yard's sky) and the scrolling clouds, both of which where only available in the original JP version.

I'm almost positive they're there by default. If I get a chance later today I'll boot it up and see if that's actually the case.
