Is the Internet Thing about the Japanese Saturn release of Doom being the superior port true?

Much better framerate in the JP version, still nowhere near as good as PC but very acceptable.

The Jaguar version runs full screen and full speed with lighting effects if I rememeber correctly (been a while since I fired up the Jag.

The 3DO version reminds me of playing Doom on an unaccelerated Amiga 1200, you have to reduce the screen size to get an anywhere near acceptable speed and even then it's pretty slow.

Wow, I can't believe just how terrible the Saturn port is ! The Japanese version looks noticeably better but still nowhere near as good as it should have been.

If you're looking for reasons why PlayStation took over the market that fast in the West, here is one: it had a proper port of Doom - practically since launch.
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

The Saturn port is so bad because it's a port of a port if I remember correctly. It's a direct port of the PS1 version that was rushed, so there was practically no optimization or changes made due to the difference in hardware. So it had nowhere to go but worse. Had they done a port from the original PC version it probably would have been better. There is absolutely no good excuse for the Saturn to run DOOM this badly considering Lobotomy got far more demanding games to not only run on the Saturn, but run better and look better than Saturn DOOM.
