Default I hate these types of games!

    Hi,

I just played Resident Evil Code Veronica on my dear DC, and I'm so damn frustrated! I'm in the palace, I have the Goldens Guns, and I'm in the room with the music box.
The save system of RECV is fine, but there's a single thing that I hate about this type of saving: when you save, you don't get your full health! So you're stuck with a very small ammount of health to pass a so hard part!

Here's my situation: I have a handgun of 15 bullets, the knife, arrows and powder that I got from the duralium case. I keep doing the same thing again and again, I'm so p... off! Especially that one single hit, and I die, awesome, really! So here's what I do, equip the bow gun with the powder, enter the password, then kill the monster who suddently arrive, with 3 arrows (If I use the gun, I'm not fast enought, so I... die. Yeah). I get to to next room. Kill the other monster with 3 others arrows. Now, there's another one! I only have 3 arrows left. And then, I die. I never passed that part. Haha. Freakin' ridiculous, kill 3 monster with no more health, and I also need to hit the 3 monsters each time, unless I won't have anymore arrows!
And of course, I cannot flee, they'll just kill me in a single shot.

And yes, I did took every herbs in the palace (and the spray in the toilets) the first time I went there. How was I supposed to know that'll get back here in that situation?

Who else hate the fact that when you save, you restart with 1% of health? This is so frustrating!

This is why they call them survival horrors, if they were easier, they would be 3rd person shooters.

I love this game, it's really scary (Sometimes too much. XD), and you don't know what you'll find in the next room.

    But surviving with 1 HP?
And what if there's another monster in the next room? Will I be able to kill him? Or will I remain stuck... Until I start a new game (Sometimes, these things happen)? XD

Umm why would a save point replenish your health??? A few games go that, but it's hardly standard. (not even all FPSs do that, soemtimes not even between different levels -though some also have large caches of power-ups near the biginning and/or end of levels)

It's like adventure/action-adventure games or RPGs where you save progress but don't get any other bonus along with that and have to manage your inventory and stats accordingly.

What I do find annoying about some survival horror games is the lack of a finite/discrete health meter (Silent Hill tends to do that), not even off-screen sometimes. (in Silent Hill games I've played the health is only shown in the pause screen and only then very vaguely by the rate of flashing/shade of your player's picture)
That makes it rather tough to really manage your health strategically and use items accordingly.

I was hoping this thread would be about RPGs. I would rep you were that the case.

This is the very reason Code:veronica/CVX are gathering dust on my shelf whilst Resident Evil 3 and 4 get played to death - it's full of these moments.

Take the final battle - I imputting the password and had little health and ammo; whilst battling the queen bee thing I run out of ammo and had to start the whole friggening game from scratch just so I had enough supplies for this battle.

I do admit that RPGs are a complete waste of time for me; that's why I don't play to them, I stopped playing these.

Man, now this is so frustrating! I did this in Aladdin (MD), but it's not the same thing at all!

I also dislike the fact that you can't toss any useless items! The weapons that you don't use and the empty guns!

Heh, just like old adventure games where you can make a wrong decision early in the game only to find the game "closed off" much later, albeit in most cases (aside from a few bad mistakes sometimes possible at the early points of a game -like the bonding plant in Return to Zork), that's a non issue as you're supposed to have a long list of save files to go back to and regularly use trial and error for such.
For console games with 1 or 2 save files, you're screwed. (I can only imagine what Return to Zork on the PS1 would have been like... actually that's a big reason porting such games to the Sega CD would have been a bad idea too)

That's also probably why a lot of console gamers get frustrated when playing certain games totally intending such save systems. (yet they stick with 1 or 2 saves as they're used to it) That's also a great thing about many modern games supporting HDD saves, and something the Xbox championed. (a fair chunk of games supporting many, many save files)

There's actually PC ports of certain games that address that problem too: like the Silent Hill games where you're no longer limited to save points and have virtually unlimited saves, so you can go back and change things if you accidentally screwed yourself like the situation you mentioned. (insufficient supplies) Or just go back for fun and try doing things wrong to see what would happen. (like entering the wrong code into the box in Silent Hill 2 after the radio game show scene in the elevator)

I think even some of the console adventure games and RPGs might have that problem, but I'm not positive...
I seem to recall one dungeon in Zelda LTP where you could screw yourself by using a key in the wrong area too early and not being able to open the door you need to. (unless there's a shop selling keys somewhere in that game that I don't know about)

Of course, this system is fine, because if you could save anywhere at the moment you want (Just like an emulator), you just save before the boss, and it's almost too easy (Sometimes).
The ResEv system is great; I just prefer when you get your full health. But how could you get your full health with a typewriter, anyway?
