This is easily a Top 10 game, graphics wise.

It's a great game but it does seem to hang a bit in the 2 player mode.
Yeah this game is fantastic, definitely one of the top games for the system. Though I'm not sure why people find it so difficult. It's a fairly long game, but compared to some other platformers, ie: the first X-Men, Mystic Defender or Alisia Dragoon, this game is a walk in the park. I beat it when it first came out, and now I can beat it without losing a life. Some level memorization is required, but most of the levels you can totally just explore different paths and wander about freely as long as you're careful. There aren't any bottomless pits or cheap deaths either, which is very nice. The level design is incredible that way.

the 1st xmen game is terrible

First X-Men is hard, but not terrible. Admittedly, the thing at the end where you have to reset the system is kind of weird, but also sort of genius.
The 1st one to me was crap it could of been so good if it was more like golden axe style the platform bits where shocking imo

Alright I've been holding off on joining this thread but screw it.
X-Men 2 Clone Wars was a game I salivated over for so so long when I didn't have a Genesis and wanted one. I wanted this game so bad I think my first wet dream was of the fight with the sentinel computer. I've played this game a whole heck of a lot. And there is a strange phenomenon that occurs when you play a game you love a whole lot which is that you begin to notice everything wrong with it. Thats what happens when you play a game less like a gamer and more like a tester. Now don't get me wrong this is still one of if not my all time favorite Genesis game, but yeah, it does have a few flaws.
Theres no difficulty setting because I think you chosse your difficulty based on who your playing as. The characters can be split into three main groups, the climbers (wolverine, nightcrawler) the shooters (cyclops, gambit) and the clingers (psylock and beast) or as I like to call the last group, the suckers...cause they suck. And thats my first complaint. These two characters are totally useless. The shooters are fun to play with for a bit of a different feel, but the climbers have what it takes and even though Nightcrawler is my favorite mutant, you'd have to be nuts not to play as Wolverine. The ability to heal puts him on top. Someone said he's only good for four levels. We must be playing different games. There is nothing Wolverine can't do here.
But as much as I hate psylock and Beast in this game, the most frustrating thing in the world, the biggest burn in this game, is how effing useless Magneto is. Imagine your a kid who loves the X-Men. You finally get to that level and suddenly, omfg! I can play as Magneto!? You'd piss your pants in excitement right? Obviously your playing as him. Well bad news cause your gonna get slaughtered. Magneto's little tough guy strut will have those boulders on apocalypse's mountain cracking your skull wide open. Thats ok right cause you can use him elsewhere...sure....if you have a death wish! There is no where that Magneto is useful compared to the other characters. NO WHERE. I've heard some bull crap about the apocalypse computer, but that's BS because floating over the obstacles isn't so great, wolverine or really anyone can avoid them easy enough, its not hard. But Magneto for some reason takes forever to kill the guy.
I have other complaints as well, I don't want to bitch to much though, like I said it really is one of my all time faves...Although Wolverine is so good at everything they could have claimed the Phalax took all the other x-men hostage, made this a Wolverine game, and it still would have been fine.
Oh and one last thing....text based ending?? Really?? Its based on a bloody comic book, are you telling me some well drawn comic book frames or something for the ending was just to damned much to add! Christ!
The first one was just really annoying. Poor sound and weird level design, plus your mutant powers are limited. I remember repeatedly falling down and Jean Gray levitating me back up.
X-Men 2 was the first X-Men game I played where the characters actually looked like how they were drawn in the comics. Plus it plays great. Btw, I wrote the site's review and I regret what I said about the game's sound, which is better than I said. I do still think it would've been nice if it had on-screen comic-style scenes instead of that stupid text. But it's a great action-platformer, definitely recommended.
That's funny. I use Psylocke and Beast quite a bit. Psylocke's sword is the best weapon in the game IMO.

Yeah the music in X2 is possibly my favorite soundtrack on the genesis. I know someone, maybe on a different thread, said they weren't crazy about it because they didn't like techno...But I thought...don't a lot of Genesis games have a techno soundtrack? anyway I can jam out to it.
You thought Psylocke's sword was better than wolverine's A attack? Well rather than critizing you I'll take the high road and say maybe your just better at it than me. Psylock'e mutant power looked cool but wasn't very effective. I appreciate the realism in making it only work on organic matter like the character, but that made her difficult to use.
Beast's punches did double damage, making him best for boss levels, i.e. the last level, and Psylocke's charged up (full health) power did 3 times damage, which is as much as Wolverine's charged power, so she's still a valid character. Magneto on the other hand is useless, although not as much in the Apocolypse level, as he could float and completely avoid getting hit.
I always found Magneto to be one of the most useful characters in this game. Especially in that second last Brood level where all those stupid little suicide broods charge you, or the large ones with the machingun tail hang out at the bottom of the shafts. Magneto's floating ability is perfect for avoiding them, and his explosive energy sphere is perfect for taking them out, espcially when you have him at full health and it does massive damage. I find he's also the best to use against the Brood Queen and the evil clone bosses. Quite frankly fighting the Queen as anyone other than Magneto would be insane.
Though I suppose everyone plays this game differently. I usually have a preferred character for each level, and end up using every character at least once. Each character has unique abilities that make them especially good for some levels and I just capitalize on that.
I've never disliked techno. I would still say that it has a couple of weak tracks, and I guess I was thinking of those tracks too much when I wrote the review.
For example:
This track fits the atmosphere of the level well enough, but I wouldn't exactly call it a good tune. It's too ambient and blasé.
I was talking about normal attacks, not mutant powers. Psylocke's sword has much better range than other people's punches. She also has the classic sword jump attack that goes in a circle. Comes in handy a lot. I do agree that she had a relatively weak mutant power; I was just saying her sword is better than other regular attacks.
Beast has his moments too. For example, the fifth level -- the one with the flying guys with plasma rifles, and the green gun turrets. His punches kill the guys and the guns in one hit. With Beast, I breeze through that level. With other characters, those guys often get a shot in, in between my hits, because they don't die in one.

I got a US version of this game a few months ago for like $2. My Mega Drive is japanese (first model) and I hardly ever like US cover designs for the MD/Genesis, so I opened the plastic clamshell, took the board out and placed it inside a spare japanese clamshell I had (after removing Shining Force board, oops). Despite it was released on 1995, X-men 2 doesn't have region lockout, so it works flawlessly on a japanese MD. I also created a new cover design to match the rest of games in my (quite small) collection:

I finished the game with all the characters. Magneto is very handy.
