I'm a child of an Italian family, and the first language I spoke was Italian(although I've lost a good bit of it - I'm taking Italian courses now to try to get back what I lost). I went(and am still going - I'm in CEGEP now) to English school, and we'd have French courses several times during the week. And it's true, some English kids don't want to learn French and some French kids don't want to learn English. As for my parents, they're tri-lingual(English, French and Italian), but I speak to my father in French and to my mother in English.

On the other side of Canada, nearly everyone at my many schools spoke only english, or english and some other language (Chinese, Italian, etc.) I only had to take french in 2nd grade and couldn't pick up a thing. I only know a handful of people who can speak french.

Well, my parents can speak french, but that's about it. My Mom is better though.
