I would love for it to be possible for a N64 to use component video and do the widescreen format like it does on the Virtual Console (and make it look just as sharp and clear). Is it?
Nintendo, like idiots, removed the RGB lines from the AV connector for the N64. You have to solder wires from the proper place on the mobo to the AV connector to get RGB back (and for some revs, add a video buffer). There are pages that cover the RGB mod. Once you've done the RGB mod, you can use a SNES RGB cable for RGB out, which you can then run through an RGB to Component converter for component output. Of course, if you're modding the N64 for RGB, you could go ahead and add an RGB-component converter inside the N64 and use the RGB out as component out directly.
Widescreen has nothing to do with the output, but rather the aspect ratio of the images generated by the game. The game needs to generate that "squished" look so that when the TV stretches it out for widescreen, it looks proper. You can experiment with widescreen on any type of video out.
I've seen several YT videos demonstrating overclokcing and the CPU seems to do very little but the RSP makes a huge difference in some cases, namely for choppy games. (one was showing Goldeneye running normal choppy speed then overclocked to 2 higher speeds -forget how fast- where it ran very smooth)
