Default Sonic 4 VS Sonic Fan Remix

So everyone is probably aware by now that Sega just released Sonic 4, and most people here are probably also aware that the fan project Sonic Fan Remix has also just been released. So, let's discuss, which is better...

    My reveiws:

    Sonic Fan Remix

    The Good:
    - it's Sonic back to the classics
    - accurate Sonic physics
    - nice looking Sonic sprite
    - great looking levels
    - classic gameplay and atmosphere kept intact

    The Bad:
    - camera could be zoomed out a little more
    - not yet finished

    Sonic 4

    The Good:
    - it's Sonic back to the classics
    - nice looking levels

    The Bad:
    - ugly demented Sonic sprite (honestly does no one at Sega remember what their mascot looks like?)
    - inaccurate and just terrible physics
    - camera could be zoomed out a little more (except PS3 version)
    - plays more like Sonic Rush 3 than Sonic 4

    The winner: Sonic Fan Remix.
Seriously, Sega needs to hire those guys and have them make the Sonic games from now on. At least have them make the Sonic classic games.

My gripe with SFR is that its got so much stuff going on on the backgrounds that it becomes distracting.... and that it runs like crap on a PC that should handle it nicely, sloppy programming or something ?
But I do love how the physics actually work, and it feels great ^^

Just based off of the two videos, I'd have to go with the remix project. Sonic 4 is ok, but there are some HUGE issues with it that stop it from being one of the better Sonic games in recent memory, the physics and controls being two of them. SFR seems to have a mugh tighter control scheme, not to mention there's almost zero lag for sonic to build up to full speed, something that is highly criticized in Sonic 4. Plus, there's no auto lock on, so you have full control of your character.

SFR uses the Unity 3D engine. If it runs like crap on a computer, that's where the issue lies, not the game itself. I imagine that Unity is not optimised and assumes you have a relatively modern system with lots of horsepower.

I don't think your computer needs to be that high-end to run it. My desktop is over 3 years old now, and it ran perfectly on all the highest settings.

That aside though, I imagine it would run flawlessly on any of the current gen systems... well except maybe the wii.

So his Pentium III machine isn't up to snuff? (I forget what graphics card he's using, but that's probably the bigger issue for the most part)

It plays fine on my 2 GHz Turion laptop only when at the lowest settings, but again it's probably more tied to the graphics card than anything else. (embedded NVidia 7150 which I think isn't even as good as my old Radeon 9600 in some respects)

Sonic Fan Remix plays pretty good for me on "fantastic" setting. My CPU is an Intel 2.0GHz dual core and my video card is an Nvidia GeForce 9600 GSO.

Only real problem is my monitor. It's 4:3, not widescreen. I'll probably just have to play windowed...

I tried it at work, here's a AMD Athlon 64 3200+ and Nvidia GeForce 6600, and that machine was choking on it, even on the lowest settings...

The PIII I got probably "plays" like a slide show with its Radeon 9600...

yeah, the system requirements are a little much for the Sonic Fan Remix. which imo maks Sonic 4 instant winner.

Oh... that's odd given how my laptop manages it. At default settings (2nd to highest detail and 1024x768 window) it runs like a slide show on my turion X2 NVidia 7150 laptop, but cutting to the absolute lowest settings ("fastest" and 512x384 it runs fine. (not 60 FPS, but at least 30 FPS)

I'm tempted to see how it would run on our Sempron 3200 machine (actually it might be an Athlon again, I forget...) and I think that's using an older Nvidia card or a radeon 9600 too, but I forget for sure. (my dad swapped a bunch of stuff around in that thing recently, I know it used to be a radeon 9500, but that got fried a couple years ago)

it may also be because the game seems to want to do Vsync, and as a result it gets choppy...

It really needs more graphics options.

What the hell, why is there no Sonic 4 demo? I tried the Sonic Fan Remix Demo and like it a lot. Since Sonic 4 has no demo, Sonic Fan Remix wins my vote.

Sonic Fan Remix. Although I prefer Sonic 4 layout.
