There were plenty of 3D free-roaming city games before GTA3 came along. Besides Carmageddon 2 there was Driver, and the more quirky Sim Copter (where you could even fly around in your own Sim City 2000 cities, awesome)

Squeenix can go fuck a duck (man, I LOVE that one! Thanks Melf!). And like GeckoYamori said, if they don't want their IPs to be damaged, they should have also sent a C&D to Front Mission Evolved's devs. Or to TOSE for Dragon Quest Heroes and DQ Monsters. Just sayin'
And I also agree with NeoVamp. Stop releasing your kajillion Final Fantasies, Dragon Quests (although they don't release many DQ games AFAIK) and other RPGs for a while and release some, I dunno, DIFFERENT games? At least one or two from any of Eidos' IPs? And it won't count if it has some RPG-lite element. I don't want to see the next Hitman or Kane & Lynch with some sort of leveling-up system a la Dirge of Cerberus. Heck, I don't want to see ANY game with Dirge of Cerberus-style gameplay. That game was awful.
And there was Body Harvest too. On the case of Sim games there was also Streets of SimCity, which had a little bit of Twisted Metal in there as well (in SimCity 2000 made cities, no less)

Square have been this insane for a while now. They think the most harmless things hurts their rep and try to get them removed for it.
Try uploading the opening CG movie or ending CG movie of Dissidia Final Fantasy on Youtube it will not let you because Square Enix told Youtube to not allow anyone upload those parts of the game. Best thing is the opening CG of that game has no plot spoilers at all not like any of the games makes sence anyway.
They Ban people from FF14 for using Square Enix Character names and there always trying to stop Fan sites from giving out certain information on games.
They are that insane when they was a video game music Concert playing there music when it was uploaded online the part with Square Enix game's music had the video removed and Replaced with random fan art. Just because behind the band was playing CG scenes from their games.
The less Final Fartasy CG propagation out there the better, but Squenix outright banning it is the wrong way to go about it.
Anyone remember Urban Chaos? Possibly the most 'influential' precursor to GTA III. But really bringing GTA to 3D was met with way too much hysteria. Same thing with GTA4. I'd say sans the 80s nostalgia/fetishism of Vice City I dislike the entire series and think much highly of a few of its clones instead (the first True Crime and Saints Row 2 to be precise)
for some reason all this C&D shit reminds me of checking out WWF fan sites in the late 90's, (yes, the wrassling stuff)
Because back then the WWF was always busy taking down sites that hosted 5 second stamp sized clips and images.
I guess they didn't expect for this Internet thing to take off, but eventually they understood that taking down fan sites
was only damaging to their image.
Maybe someday Squenix will understand what the Internet is and leave fan games alone.
I haven't played Urban Chaos on the Dreamcast or PC, I was told it was horribly flawed and that usually attracts me to try a game but I haven't seen it in the wild. That PC video looks like a PS1 game, maybe that was why people criticized it? Nonetheless, it does seem very much like incredibly over-popular GTA 3.

Oh I didn't mean to say Urban Chaos is a good game in any way, whereas GTA3 obviously is (just not for me).
Oh Crap, I hadn't even thought of that. I assumed that after Legacy of Kain: Defiance got trashed for no real reason we would never see another in the series. At that point I considered Eidos and Crystal Dynamics dead and just stopped watching what happened to the companies.
On a lighter note, this thread made me pick up Urban Chaos for Dreamcast, along with Trickstyle to average the shipping cost. Urban Chaos doesn't look to be horribly flawed based on that video it just looks like it was still a little early to be trying to blend gameplay models in real time like that. GTAIII's horrible fighting and shooting mechanics is a deal breaker for me, but wasn't for the rest of the world.

After Crystal Dynamics finished Defiance, Eidos payed another developer to make a sequel based on a modified Defiance engine called "Dark Prophecy". It was cancelled in early development and details only came to light when someone who worked on the project posted his resume on a job site.
As for the series as a whole, it's doubtful Square will ever continue it, which is a shame.

Didn't I make a thread on that several months ago?
Wow. Do these people hate their fans?
Here's my worst problem with Square-Enix...
Square-Enix owns Eidos now...
Eidos owns Ion Storm...
Ion Storm makes the Deus Ex series.
And considering how Square likes their RPGs now (with one of Final Fantasy's lead designers even insulting the concept of games like System Shock, Deus Ex and Fallout 3) it's highly unlikely Deus Ex 3 will be anything like the original.
It seems that it's like that
I dunno, if that's the case it may be like Anachronox (also by Eidos and ION Storm): a turn-based RPG. What's interesting is that apparently that game was inspired by Chrono Trigger.
Also FO3 and System Shock 2 are WAY better than Square and/or Enix's kajillion-bazillion RPGs they keep churning out (although Illusion of Gaia was excellent, I loved that game). On the subject of turn-based RPGs, Phantasy Star IV and Lunar FTW.
Pulstar: I've never played Urban Chaos, but a friend of mine had it for PS1 and he never liked it. I did however play (and own) the excellent Urban Chaos: Riot Response (also by Eidos but not related at all with the original), which is quite possibly one of the best (if not THE best) FPS for the PS2
The Jackal: If they do continue it my guess is that they'll add some RPG-lite elements to it. Or make a Legacy of Kain RPG on DS.

Didn't know about that game, oh and btw, it would seem that for the last decade Square-Enix has been avoiding any mention of Chrono Trigger for some reason... Except for that DS re-hash, but the added content to that can't hold a candle to the rest of the game.
Don't get me wrong, I do like some turn-based RPGs (Chrono Trigger is easily in the top-5 in my list of best games I've ever played) but, the fact that a "leader" in the gaming industry would discourage any attempt to differentiate gaming as an entertainment media, from say movies or books due to their linear format and lack of choice, seems kind of sickening to me.Also FO3 and System Shock 2 are WAY better than Square and/or Enix's kajillion-bazillion RPGs they keep churning out (although Illusion of Gaia was excellent, I loved that game). Quick question. Have you ever played Deus Ex for PC or PS2?
