Default Castle of Illusion - Which version should I buy?

There appears to be three versions of Castle of Illusion. I hear the game is very good, but never really for what system. I'm sure you all know which consoles you can get it on:

    Genesis
    Master System
    Game Gear

Which one should I get? Or should I buy them all?

If you can get them all then heck yeah, get them all! Disney never lets down for fun on Sega consoles.

Castle of Illusion in any form doesn't disappoint, so it's really a win/win/win scenario. But if you're just starting out, go for the Genesis one. It came out first and can easily be found for cheap. Happy gaming!

Both, the Mega Drive and the Master System version. Both are great and rather different.

The Game Gear version I would not recommend. Not because it's bad per se but because it is identical to the SMS version. And in this case it means that it is not a straight port of the SMS version - it is the SMS version running on GG in its SMS compatibility mode.
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

I found better gameplay and fun with SMS/GG version. But you should test both.

Tha Master System version is like a completely different game and plays great. It was just a bit on the short side, they fixed that in the sequel Land of Illusion which you also ought to check out.

I'd buy the Genny version first. Then the SMS version if you enjoyed it (since it's a completely diff game). As for the GG version, I'd stick with the SMS version and buy a SMS adpater for it, lol. In my opinion, if it's not an exclusive GG title, you might as well go for the SMS version (and even play it throught the SMS adapter on your GG).

...Which reminds me, I really want to mod a beat-up GGr with RGB-out.

I have both and they are really different games. I like the Genesis version but the SMS version is awesome too. It looks great for the 8-bit machine. It's much harder than the Genesis version. Well at least I think it is anyway. Get them both for sure eventually.

Wow! MN12BIRD good to meet you! I have watched your show since you posted a video about receiving some SMS games from England as a gift.

I have a strong since of nostalgia for the Genesis version of COI. The graphics and atmosphere where extremely unique back then. I'd love to try the SMS version though.

I like the Genesis version best, the Master System and Game Gear versions are pretty much the same game w/ the Master System version being better due to controls and not having to w/ Game Gear awful screen.

I'll go for the Genesis version and pick up the Master System one too if you can find it cheap since they are both good games. The Genesis one gives me back good memories and while I didn't get past the 3rd stage on Normal mode due to lack of skills (rubbish gamer), it was enjoyable at every moment especially when the Toyland stage flipped upside that I thought was nifty when I was much younger. Hardly played the SMS one and it does seem harder but from what little I played, there does seem to be a bit more exploring as in not completely left to right in the first stage. Actually I prefer the SMS sprite of Mickey strangely enough than the MD sprite of him, something doesn't seem right.

You can avoid the Game Gear version (unless you have one and want to play the game on the go or want all 3 versions) since it is literally just the Master System version (one of the few games on the Game Gear that boot up in SMS mode) with a changed copyright number, changed the font to be a bit uglier so the writing can be read on a GG and swapped the jump button around.

I think the SMS version is far better than the Mega Drive version. The MD version is slow paced, the controls are crap and the game just feels boring. The SMS game handles much better and the pace of the game is far more suited to a platformer. Both are too short and far too easy though. Buy Quackshot instead .
