    Default The Walking Dead

The TV series premiered in the US recently with a 1 hour pilot. I've seen it, and as someone who has followed the comic I think they really nailed it. There is very little adaptation decay, instead it fleshes things out with some good new ideas. The production values are really high, and it doesn't hold back on the gore at all, but doesn't present it in a juvenile sensationalist way either.

I don't really like the general direction zombie fiction has headed since the 00's with fast nerdraging zombies like 28 Days or the Dawn remake, or weird super-power zombies like in Left 4 Dead. The Walking Dead is exactly the zombie series I have been waiting for since the Romero classics.

I never read the comics so I wasn't sure wha to expect, but I must say I am imressed with the show so far. I think they could have come up with a better opening though guy wakes up in hospital........can you say 28 days later. But really enjoyed it so I wont complain to much

Exactly my feelings, if they continue to closely follow the comic story then this will easily run for 5 awesome seasons.

I however read that the director wants to introduce Michonne early in Season 2, since she's a fan favorite or something.
Personally i never really cared much about her character, don't hate her but also don't really shout YAY! whenever she appears.

28 Days Later later stole the waking up in the hospital from The Day of the Triffids, nothing is original.

Coincidentally yesterday it premiered over here in Latin America. I was a bit sick of Fox constantly airing the commercials for the show. They would air them 2 or 3 times on every commercial break.

I didn't watch it. I should have, since it looks like a pretty good show. Heck, they aired it right after The Simpsons, which I was also watching! Instead, I watched the Warner Channel 2 hours earlier to The Walking Dead's premiere on Fox, since they were airing some new shows too (Mike & Molly and Better With You, although when they premiered Mike & Molly Fox was airing Futurama, so I mostly watched Futurama, switching to Mike & Molly during commercial breaks. They were actually good, to be honest)

You should really try to watch a rerun of walking dead, its classic zombie stuff.

Zombie movies should really abide by the following rules :

    1 - Slow zombies
2 - AND LOTS OF THEM
    3 - hole up somewhere
    4 - raid stores
    5 - RUN AWAAAAAAAAAY!

And really Romero.. undead chick riding a horse? what were you thinking!

Don't forget makeshift weapons and the most beautifully crafted firearm, the Shotgun! Every film needs a Shotgun, even non-zombies films...

I REALLY should, considering my love for the Dead Rising games, which, for me, are a tribute to classic zombie fiction. Sure, Left 4 Dead may have those super fast zombies and different kinds of them (CHARGER!), but there's nothing quite as dangerous as wandering through a place filled with thousands of slow, but dangerous zombies trying to eat/kill you and/or the survivors stranded there.

Based on the first episode, I like it a lot, but there are two things I don't like:

It moves a little slow at times.

It takes place in the deep south. That wouldn't be a problem if it didn't look like most of the characters are trailer trash/hillbillies. Makes it less relatable, and quite literally leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Ask yourself this, does it really move slow, or have the fast days that we live in changed our brain in such a way
so that we constantly expect instant gratification?

Nothing wrong with slow paced programs, makes ya stop and relax.

Correct, except in the case where it's a zombie show, aka action show, aka show that's supposed to be fairly fast paced. This isn't a drama, it's a scifi show.

Incorrect, its not scifi.. its horror!

Horror should always be slow paced, to increase tension.

Thats why 28 days wasn't scary, everything was going so fast and there was no real sense of impending doom.

This isn't horror. There were no jump scenes to my recollection (maybe one out of an hour and a half). Most of it was walking down deserted highways, riding horses, talking on radios, and more walking. The best scenes were when he goes into the city and finds that he's surrounded and when he leaves the hospital and finds everything destroyed, which were not slow-paced. The part where you see someone coming up behind him was rightfully slow-paced because it actually had suspense, i.e. "uh oh, is that a zombie or a human, let's find out what happens."

There's also a difference between being slow-paced and taking too damn long to get to the point. This show is in between, I think.

28 days wasn't scary per se, but it was freaky as hell and very suspenseful. They did a damn good job with that series.

All the survivors after the cop and father-son duo were living in trailers and wearing wife-beaters and loose t-shirts. Hopefully they aren't going to end up following the stereotype.
