Hypothetically, if a person wanted to hack the names in Italia 90, it appears to be pretty straight forward. Example... If you wanted to change the name of the goal keeper for the Italian team from "GARRO" to something else, just open up the ROM with any good hex editor and go to ROM offset $00D9E5 and type in whatever name you want.
One restriction... the new name has to be the same number of letters (or less) as the original. To use longer names requires a lot more hacking.
One more thing... If you "hypothetically" make any changes to the ROM, it will give you the red screen of death and the game won't run. This happens because you have changed the checksum. Easily fixed. Just go to ROM address $00034E (with a hex editor) and change the 67 to 60. This kills the checksum check. The game will now run just fine with as many changes/hacks as you care to make.
