I haven't bought a new FPS for years

To me, the best multiplayer game was Duke Nukem 3D. The maps were great and fun. And the weapons! And the jetpack! And steroids!! I cannot remember how many dukematches hours played at e1l1....

Counter Strike had nice maps, but i dont like slow gameplay :S

One thing I do enjoy about Doom is that the player is so agile - ducking and strafing and maneuverability are all vital to succeeding at higher difficulty levels. You can dodge enemy fire, even getting them shooting amongst each other, if you're quick and clever enough.

What I don't enjoy is how the gameplay boils down to 'run through corridor -> press switch -> murder monsters -> grab key -> goto 10'. However, it gets a free pass due to there being literally nothing to draw inspiration from, besides early arcade shooters like Robotron.

You guys remember Heretic and Hexen? Good times.

I do remember Heretic; I had the full version on a disc full of DOS games, which is how I discovered Doom 2 and Wolfenstein 3D. It was a pretty good game, I gotta say.

I've never played multiplayer on Duke3D or Quake, but I did play some awesome multiplayer with my brother on Unreal. The maps of that game were lots of fun.

This topic is more about the maps of FPS not the actual gameplay, at least that's how I see it. Judging by that basis, this is a legitimate thread.

And I have seen improvement over Half Life 1, namely: Half Life 2.

Personally, I think mapping peaked with American McGee's Alice. The levels there are so awesome, nothing seems even remotely good afterwards... well, that may be going a LITTLE too far, but you get my point.

Anyone play the original Blood? That game had some killer levels. Shadow Warrior was good too. Most FPS's now aren't as creative and original. Obviously there are some exceptions, such as Bioshock.

Yeah, point one. Now every FPS is a scripted one. Realistic weapons, soldiers, low health... Almost every deathmatch is a Counter Strike clone (a Half-Life mod) So, yes, a huge improvement i can see... Very little FPS tried to innovate like Bioshock, or Portal...
