I just checked through a list of Japanese releases and I stand by my estimation of 600, there were ~1200 releases for the Saturn in Japan, but that's separately including "greatest hits" re-releases, general special editions and boxsets, and demo's. It also contains a hefty amount of non-game software (art CD's, visual novels etc).

There are 1434 US PS1 releases including plenty of fluff (only 1161 have release years posted online, which goes all the way to 2005) and 1091 Japanese Saturn releases. We could nitpick these libraries down to less than 500 actual games that matter in the US pretty easily I'd suspect.

I personally would consider most sports titles of the same name one game and most sequels in the PS1 library as technically identical or utterly replaced by its latest iteration. That is of course not fair, but there are people who consider portrait disks important additions to a console library.

I wouldn't say only 10% of the Saturn's library is worth owning. I'd say if there are about 100-200 PS1 games worth owning and playing, there is probably close to an equal amount of Saturn games worth owning.

It is a choice of column a and column b, I would choose Playstation.

Sure the Saturn is a quirky machine with character compared to the dull grey box that is the Playstation. Yeah I love a bit of Daytona, Sega Rally and Virtua Cop but the library of the PS1 appeals to me more. One of my favourite genres are racing games and the Playstation covers that of all types whether it was arcade, simulation and whatever Micro Machines V3 comes under. I had so many memories of Rage Racer, fooling around with Gran Turismo 1 & 2 and a tiny bit of TOCA that are very hard to replace. Sadly I don't own a rally game however I did play V-Rally 1 and 2 which I found quite good, the latter having a track editor if I remember. The only one to me that lacking a bit though was Formula 1 which strangely the N64 gets that title for me (F1 World Grand Prix 2, tried the Playstation version and it was one slippery mess/poor controls that I had to take back), then again I haven't tried Formula One 97 that seems to be the best one. There were also a bunch of other games that I liked as well (Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time, GTA, Crash 2, Soviet Strike, Die Hard Trilogy, among others).

Reading recommendations of the Saturn seems to be mainly expensive games (Panzer Dragoon Saga, Radiant Silvergun the latter being inflated), 2D fighting arcade ports (which in this day and age there are better options out there but back in that era it would be amazing to have a close arcade port unless it was a SNK game, the Neo Geo covered that however the Saturn was more reasonable in costs), shooters and RPGs, the majority being imports. Since I'm not into RPGs or shooters (bar a couple of exceptions), poor at fighting games and having virtually little knowledge of Japanese, there would only be a few games that I would be interested for the console sadly probably about 15-20 games at the most (excluding Sega Rally, Sonic R and Sega Touring Car Championship, have official PC ports of them unless the Saturn version of Sega Rally is better).

There is a thought though, I wonder if GTA would have been more accepted if it was released on the Saturn considering while there were good reviews of the game, there were seems to be a stigma against 2D games for the Playstation (I remember in one review of a Playstation magazine can't remember which one, Mega Man X3 just said AVOID! or something like that and gave it a 3/10 to give one example).

Was the Playstation port of Megaman X3 even released outside of Japan? To my knowledge only the Saturn one was released outside of Japan and it was released in Europe.

Overall I'd say the playstation just because there's WAY more good games for it. The only way to play a lot of the good games for the saturn is to pay copious amounts of money for an import. I'm as much of a sega fanboy as anyone else, but you're lying to yourself if you really think the saturn is overall the better console. There's literally 10X more good games for the PSX, there's a reason it was in production for so long. The saturn had potential, but sega pretty much bailed on it. I did like the saturn controller a lot more than the ps1's. Actually probably my favorite controller.

It is almost pretty good ...but the cinematics and acting (all with American actors) are downright painful.
I just couldn't get into it though because all I could think is how much I'd rather be playing Panzer Dragoon Zwei. Comparing these two games is also notable because it is an instance where the graphic qualities of the Saturn game are much better than the similarly styled Playstation game.
There's another one I was thinking of and I know it's a fairly popular one, but I can't remember what it is...

I think it was a little more reminiscent of Panzer Dragoon than Zwei, but a bit of a different style in general.

I can't seem to find a good list of games sorting out rail shooters at all on any websites either.

Saturn FTW. Games that haven't been released on any other platforms and are critically acclaimed, the Playstation library is overexpanded and overrated IMO.

I've got to agree with you. I love the old Sega and all of their hardware, but IMO the PlayStation beats the Saturn and won that hardware "generation" for many good reasons.

Still, the real world isn't only one or the other. I love my Saturn and many Saturn games. But if I was stuck on an imaginary island that had electricity and could only bring either a PSX or a Saturn, I would get more use, variety, and fun out of the PSX.

I have to admit. This one is pretty ackward indeed. I love my Saturn to Death, but I don't know what they were thinking when they made this one. It's like the physical version of ULTIMATE... errr...uhm....Anything!

The Saturn 6-button pad was awesome enough (the best 6-button pad in my opinion). No need to make it XTREME!!!

[EDIT] I still can't help it though, it looks so pretty...

both systems had their strength's and weakness's, I enjoyed playing both the sega saturn and playstation during the 90's but I prefer the sega saturn a bit more then the playstation.

the reason I prefer the saturn is alot of the games on it have a more arcade like feel to them, plus I love 2d games and the saturn has a ton of those. it is also a extremely easy system to play imports on thanks to the pro action replay 4 in 1 cartridge.

I also like the system design (model 1 saturn) alot better then the playstation design and the controller is alot more comfortable on the saturn and i'm not talking about the crap american model 1 controller, i'm talking about this awesome controller. the controller is such a awesome design that it's even been reborn into a playstation 2 controller and usb pc controller around 2004-2005.

and to the people saying that saturn fans who prefer the saturn over the playstation are dillusional, are you serious? thats a load of crap to say that. both systems have alot of good games and are fun to play, neither one is really all that superior to the other.

So should we prefer the SNES to the Genesis then, too?

I don't care about sales figures or public perception, honestly. I love the PSX and it has loads of great games, but the simple fact of the matter is that more of the games I love are on the Saturn. Hence, I prefer the Saturn, and I don't see anything wrong with that.

Well, I'll use my personal Wantlist as the judge:

    1. Panzer Dragoon Zwei
    2. Panzer Dragoon Zwei 2
    2. Panzer Dragoon Orta
    3. Wing Arms
    4. Thunderhawk II - Firestorm
    5. Virtua Cop
    6. Virtua Cop 2
    7. Virtual On: Cyber Troopers
    8. Guardian Heroes
    9. Castlevania: SotN
    10. Burning Rangers
    11. Worldwide Soccer 98
    12. Radiant Silvergun
    13. Shining Force III
    14. Dragon Force?
    15. Nights Into Dreams
    16. Sega Rally

Some cool games in there for sure, but at this point... I still haven't decided if this wantlist makes getting a Saturn worth it or not.

    I have over 200 PS2 (and some misc PS1... around 20 I think).
I'm gonna have to go with Sony on this one.
