I own both and I think they suck.
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

I own a pair of 3 buttons. I think they're better than pads but aren't the best arcade sticks you can buy.

The absolute epitome of a badly made arcade stick.

The sad part is that the Japanese versions are kick ass joysticks. It's just us Europeans and Americans that got ripped off again.

I guess it's just me, but I like my six-button for certain types of games.

I have both, and I've had to open them and clean them to keep them in good shape. I prefer these to my random 8 directional style Genesis joystick in some cases. The stick is actually very responsive when it is clean.

The 6 button ones are pretty nice for fighting games, if fighting games are your cup of tea.

I got a couple of the three button ones myself. Built like a god damn tank, thing weighs more than a newborn.

Perfect for Ms. Pacman, ok for shooters like Fire Shark... crap for platformers. I assume for wandering RPGs it is pretty easy going.

I have both and they both work well. The 3-button version is better made and of higher quality. In fact, I haven't used a higher quality joystick yet. Normally I prefer the pad, but on a game like Ghostbusters which has no diagonals and necessitates rapid fire, the 3-button arcade stick is perfect. I love the hand rest on the left.

How is the Japanese version better? If anything, I imagine it would be smaller, but since I am an American I do not have pathetically tiny hands.

The US and European variants look practically identical to the Japanese version but do use rubber contacts instead of microswitches. That's like mounting a stick to your regular 3 button controller. These gotta be the worst joysticks ever made.
Real arcade sticks (and the Commodore Amiga / C64 joysticks my friend had) do use microswitches. These are precise, very responsive and you don't need to move the stick all the way across the room until you get a reaction on screen. It clicks as soon as you touch the stick and your character reacts immediately.
