Hey
I had a fella who was going to sell me a svideo modded genesis 1, however he has not responded.. anyone selling one? Needing it shipped to me in Canada. Would you do svideo or do the RGB to component way?
thanks

If you already have a Genesis, I say go for RGB to Component. Getting the converter may be a tad bit pricey (I managed to score mine for about 50 bucks though) but it's worth it in the long run, seeing as one converter + importing a cheap and common 3-way scart switcher = 3 consoles already equipped to play in Component given you have the scart cables (not expensive either) for each.

Yea I am leaning towards this option of RGB.... how do I know exactly what model of genesis i have? I think it is one, it is the original one, just does not say HIgh Def on it.
Yeah, it's a tough one. The RGB to component thing seems like a bit of a pain with the SCART cables, swich, and converter box, but you'd spend $50 getting a genesis with S-video anyways...and the component setup can be used for your SMS, your saturn, and maybe SNES.
One BIG issue with component is that lots of LCD TVs DO NOT support 240p over component... Mine is one of them. To test this, put a PS1 game in your PS2 over component...then see if you lose your picture. I did.
So for me it's a tough decision. I my try to do the s-video mod myself, but I'm also considering the RGB to HDMI solution. The bad thing is my other HDTV is a CRT and it doesn't do component :-/
Wish there was an easy solution to it all...
I've got a fully modded Genesis in the works if you're willing to wait a few days - new paint job, s-video, region mod, 50/60hz mod, and a switchable 10 Mhz overclock w/ halt switch.
I forgot to mention that the Philips brand 3-Way Scart Switcher I have has two sets of av out ports, so you won't have to worry about not getting audio out. Even though I don't use my switcher yet since I only have one scart cable for the Genesis 1/CD2/32X (I plan on getting scart cables for other consoles), I'm just using the line out port on the back of the SCD because I'm using the mixing cable method. I'm also going to need to get a scart-to-scart cable as well to plug in from the monitor out to the scart-to-component converter when I start using mine.
These can be found very easily on eBay.

Hey
What is better the svideo or RGB?? is there any comparison photos?
Not sure if it makes a diff but I am using a CRT tv...... has both Svideo and Component. so either method would work. Whats the typical svideo one cost? I have been pricing the other cables........for RGB
thanks
Jim
RGB is superior then S-video. The reason why is because through S-Video, a signal in color (with low resolution) and a signal in black & white (with high resolution) outputs at the same time. Once the signal is displayed on the TV, the TV have to upscale the signal in color and then "guess" what colors to use which is the reason why watching a movie with composite or S-video may look a bit weird in the edges. Each signal goes through it's own cable, but if you're using composite both of the signal goes through the same cable which makes the picture more compressed and therefore inferior.
When you're using RGB, the three colors that are used on a TV (red, green and blue) are in separate wires. So it outputs three signals at the same time in three diffrent cables which avoids the same sort of compression that you get with S-Video and composite. If you have CRT, use RGB. There's no reason not to use it.
Here's a feature about it, by the way.

Are you using an HDTV or SDTV? On an SDTV The difference in quality is a big leap from Composite to S-Video. From S-Video to Component is not as big, you can tell the difference side by side if you are looking. Slightly sharper picture and better definition of colors. On an HDTV it is better to have Component as the most do not do process S-Video well, from my experience.
As I now recall thanks to the article nissling posted, if you want to play the 32X in high quality video, it won't work with an S-video modded Genesis. Instead, you'll be stuck with composite video with the 32X. However, with component, the only different thing you would have to do is plug the 9-pin end into the av out port on the 32X. If you go through with this, make sure you get a Mega Drive II scart cable, which will work with the Genesis 2, CDX, Nomad, and 32X. If you plan on just playing the Model 1 alone, then stick with a Mega Drive model 1 scart cable.
