Default Anyone came to appreciate music more thanks to SCD game's RedBook soundtracks?

CD-quality music was one of the Sega CD's biggest selling points, and I guess to that end it succeeded, though not so much in providing a big graphical leap over Genesis games (guess both the SCD and 32X had the Genesis to blame for bottlenecking their capabilities eh?.....that is uh, if they all were sentient....)

My time as a Sega CD owner was brief. I got a pretty much spotless SCD2 at a FuncoLand for a cool $10 in April 1998, after having played the console for the first time at a friends house months earlier, and falling for the retroactive hype from circa-1992-1993 issues of EGM and GamePro I'd reading at the time. By '98, the market for SCD games had dried up considerably here in NYC. It was hard to come by even used games. The first of the only two games I bought for the console was "Cliffhanger", which I got off a K-B Toys clearance rack for $3 sealed the same day I bought the console.

I'll spare the mini-review of the game as most of us should've played it, but the two standout features of this game (compared to the cart Genesis and SNES versions) are the snowboarding levels running on the famed SCD Batman Returns engine, and cuts off of the official movie soundtrack as BGMs. (Stallone's character NEVER snowboarded in the movie. )

Over a decade later, the bad taste in my mouth left from playing and owning the game has long faded, but the experience of hearing the wonderful soundtrack off of the movie (composed by Trevor Jones) has stayed with me, and gave birth to my appreciation for symphonic scores. It really did enhance the rather crappy game in some parts, and made me realize just how much music could enhance the game experience, crappy as it is.

Here's my favorite cut off of the soundtrack:

seems to be something wrong with your post?
I have been pretty impressed with several sega cd game soundtracks but most recently was 'Heimdall' with the intro and the Weapons Select screen music

    Fixed!

One of my favorite Sega CD soundtracks was from The Terminator. Tommy Tallarico shines here!

    Thanks for the fix!

The part of the game in which "Icy Stream" is played starts at 4:04 of the latter video.

The console that opened my eyes to redbook audio was the TurboGrafx-16 CDROM way back in '92. A friend played the opening to Ys III, and my jaw hit the floor. Then he played Monster Lair, and I knew I had to get me a Turbo CD.

Not owning a Mega CD system until recently, it was actually the Saturn that made me appreciate CD quality audio in games. But you're right about the large role music plays in creating a good game. An average, even crap game can actaully be made more enjoyable, or bearable if you will, with a great soundtrack. The same goes for films.

Great question OP. I never got my hands on a Sega CD until a few yrs ago, after wanting it since it came out in the 90's. I do enjoy the Redbook audio a lot, especially for a handful of games.

Sonic CD (Japanese) is awesome. (I think to appreciate Sonic CD, u have to enjoy the music and stages changing, for each time travel. Some people just think it's pointless. LOL Also IMO the JP soundtrack is much more interesting, experimental, etc. I love when a stage has different versions of the same song, for past, present, & future.)

The Ecco games have beautiful soundtracks on CD, plus recordings of sea animals. (Favorite: Tides of Time.) Of course the cart versions have great synthesized music also.

I always wanted to have a Mega-Cd, because the music. Now i already have it. And i really enjoy music from Shining Force CD, and Sol Star (incredible music) I wish more games were translated into Mega-Cd (ys3 for example) or more Sonics, Ecco's, etc

That snowboarding part use to be my favorite part of Cliffhanger. Come to think of it I never beat the game.

But on to the music, I think my appreciation to Rock music comes from the Amazing Spiderman vs Kingpin game. I use to just go right to the music player and play through all the tracks. I can't tell you how awesome it was.

I also liked Sonic CD (the final release) audio tracks as well.
