The "8 way" whip was a joke so awful, they never did that again. Attacks should never look limp. Bloodlines > Super Castlevania 4.
While not in the same league as Gunstar and Contra, Demolition Man is a kick ass run n gun on the Genesis that no one ever talks about. It's fast-paced with an excellent Tommy Tallarico soundtrack. I really dig it.
I go with Alien Soldier here.
Bloodlines for Castlevania. I like being challenged, and having a use for sub-weapons.
So does the speed of Dick Tracy, Rolling Thunder II, and Rolling Thunder III exclude them from run n gun? I would say that Dick tracy has a lot of running (slowly) and gunning, along with typical run n' gun vehicle levels. If anything, I shoot just as many bullets in DT as I do in other "run n' gun" games. My tommy gun is wreaking havoc when I play that game.
If you can move and shoot without stopping, it's a run and gun. Lots of Run 'N Gun games where you "walk" faster than you can "run" in others. It's all the same to me. At the end of the day, it's just nitpicking at the animation. What matters is the gameplay.
Not to mention games where your weapon isn't exactly a gun. Run'n'gun is just a denomination based on the most common elements, but its name is not necessarily tied to the game mechanics (e.g. I swear a lot of adventure games have nothing to do with adventures, they just share the mechanics).
Rolling Thunder II was always my favorite.
Fatal Rewind was unique and also very much fun too.
Fatal Rewind was amazing. That game doesn't get enough love.
Is Rolling Thunder run n' gun though? That's a really slippery slope. Shinobi 3 is faster, and you can actually run.
There are enough Rolling Thunder style games that I consider it a genre.

Technically, autofire is not required, but many games within the genre do allow it. But for this thread, it's no matter anyway. After reading through it, it's clear that many posters here have no respect for the parameters of the run 'n' gun genre, rendering this thread a big cluster of uselessness.
Batman & Robin - Fun, pretty, but has a strange combat system that takes a while to get used to.
Contra Hard Corps - fast, fun, but difficult. The secret stage is even harder than the actual game.
Robocop vs Terminator - I still need to pick this game up. I think its probably one of the best Robocop games every made. Even better than the arcade. I still have no idea how they were able to merge these two franchises together back in the day. I mean, I know they have a comic book about it but I never thought it had enough traction to make a video game from it.
Gunstar Heroes - The best of 'em all - my favorite
Contra Hard Corps - if you patch the life bar back in
Mercs
Mega Turrican
Sunset Riders - A bad version that's still good, lots of flavor
