In the early 90s, I believe sometime in 93 after I'd gotten bored of my Master System. My Dad and sister helped pay for the second-hand console and it came bundled with Sonic 2, Pete Sampras Tennis, Cliffhanger and another game I forget.

I got my Sega Genesis 1 in June of 1993 (my 6th birthday). It came bundled with Sonic the Hedgehog and the first thing I did when my grandma opened it and hooked it up was input the Sonic 1 level select code. She was amazed I already knew how to do that. My mom's ex husband had let me play it at their apartment when I was 5 so that's why I wanted one and had already learned to play it.
Ive had mine for 20 years now i believe, It was a xmas present when i was 7 as far as i know!
Super super early Mk1 model, High definition non TMSS. I can remember friends getting ones some time after. Sega really blew the budget on the early ones, the cables are huuuaaaggggeeee its got to be over 2m long lol! The RF cable was stupidly long too although that broke eventually.
Never ever going to sell it![]()
I was late to the party in 1994 when I was 8 and got my trusty Malaysian made 3/4 motherboard Genesis 2 which still serves me faithfully today, even with a reset button that I don't think ever worked, along with Sonic and Knuckles, World Series Baseball, Sub Terrania, Mortal Kombat 2 and *gag* Batman Forever.
I had been playing the consoles owned by two of my best friends for a few years before that and had begged for one for years before finally getting it. I suffered with my NES before that and remember being made fun of by the rich kids moving on to Playstation when I finally got my Genesis.
But I didn't care, I was in love and while early 3D graphics impressed me I couldn't wrap my head around their awkward controls.
The good thing about getting it in 1994 is just about all of the classic games were already out and available cheaply thanks to the next generation being on the horizon so my collection grew quickly.
I was lucky to have a spoiled friend who had all of the consoles from every generation so I never missed out on much, including that Playstation. The Genesis stood out as my favorite though, initially drawing me in because of Sonic. I used to collect the Archie comics religiously as a child.
I blame the Genesis for making me an action gamer. RPGs never clicked with me except for some stupendous games like Crono Trigger and Skies of Arcadia.
