Is this budget collection of DC shmups with a somewhat misleading name really one of the "only" reasons to own a Wii?

If it had been released in Europe (it wouldn't be) I'd probably buy it anyway, but there are many better ways to play 2d shmups.

^Yes indeed. I stick by what I said. I may be stating my own opinion, but I have zero interest in motion controls or party/shovelware titles. It may sound extremist on my part, but I really just want to tap the 2D aspect of the console; and these are just about the only games I've found an interest in:

    1. A Boy and His Blob
    2. Muramasa: The Demon Blade
    3. Ultimate Shooting Collection
    4. Astroboy: The Movie
    5. Super Mario Bros. Wii
    6. Donkey Kong Country Returns
    7. Kirby's Epic Yarn
    8. Wario Land Shake It (I enjoy it minus the "Shake it" part. But it's still mostly just a D-Pad title, and so it is acceptable)

After those, there are indeed a couple of 3D, exclussive titles I may want eventually that use the "Wii Wand" minimalistically or not at all. And that's just a handful, once again.

And after those, I've enjoyed playing Castlevania - The Adventure and Contra Rebirths, as well as a little bit of Sonic 4. But I'm not fond at all of downloadable media.

[EDIT] I also would be very appreciative if you could help me improve on that list above. I'd really like to learn of all the 2D Hard Copy titles for the Wii (not downloadable).

I enjoy my Wii, as well as the WiiWare and Virtual Console services. I don't mind owning a WiiWare game like Mega Man 9 digitally, it's a great game and worth the purchase. I know some people see the VC as irrelevant since they can download and emulate these titles, but they are releasing imports like Sin & Punishment (which I will buy on VC as its cheaper than a physical import copy and will be emulated properly), and the enthusiastic amount of downloads stirred interest in a sequel to be made. That's notable. So I give them credit and my money where its due.

Anyways, I think Ultimate Shooting Collection plays with the wiimote sideways like New SMB does. I haven't tried it, but I am planning on getting it.

^No. It plays with the Nun Chuck controller's analog stick. It's not bad, though, as it uses no motion controls.

Smash Bros Brawl is great - plays just like the other Smash bros games but bigger. And you can use a classic controller, or GC pad - controls are exactly the same as the GC game. There's also Guilty Gear and Tatsunoko, only have the latter right now. It is ridiculous, and not strictly 2D either. But it's okay.

You also might want to look into Paper Mario for the Wii (I've not played this, but bf says it's good) and Blastworks (a 2D shmup which I saw cheap but need to find out more about).

Btw I do understand not liking download-only games, but Wiiware's probably your best source for proper 2D / retro styled games - try Bit Trip Beat (2d shmup) and Bit Trip Runner looks good as well, but I've not played that yet (no demo ;P) You might like Cave Story too, if you've not played it - free on the PC but I think it's updated for the Wii.

All 3 of these shooters are gorgeous... kids today and their lack of knowledge about graphics lends them to believe that (for example) Halo 3 is the 'only' type of Tech worth calling, "amazing". I'm using Halo 3 as a loose example.

Too subjective to argue about anyhoot...

I'm proud to say that this is the first "real" game my nephew ever owned. I bought it for him for his 9th b-day to introduce him to 2D gameplay. After that, he's never accepted shovel-ware, kiddie crappsters for his Wii.

Not just 2D, but games in general worth getting for the system at a minimum (must have). Too many VC titles to mention... imo, there's zero reason to collect Turbo Grfx 16 Hardware thanks to Nintendo and the VC.

These people don't really know what they're talking about. It's not entirely their fault for being ignorant because shmups are a genre that's totally foreign to them. It's a really niche thing these days.

It's not like an ebay or amazon review like these is going to prevent a shmup fan from buying it because they know exactly what they're getting and many have probably already played these games on the Dreamcast or at least heard of them before.

People who aren't already into shmups don't even know this exists nor would they care for it and I can see how some knuckleheads would be misled by the "shooter" title in this day and age.

All three games are okay but not fantastic anyway. None of them are going to blow away non-genre fans.
