WTF Psychic World?

Has anyone played this on the SMS or Game Gear, successfully? It seems like it has the makings of a good game, but I can't figure out how to play this f-ing thing.

You can run, jump and shoot and that's all well and good, but there are apparently usable items that you pick up, but no obvious way to use them. There's that HUD with what I assume are items in it, but how the hell do you access any of them? (see attached screenshot).

I mean really the SMS controls only have 2 buttons and both already do other stuff in this game. And nothing happens if you push the buttons when the game is paused, so like WTF... Can anyone enlighten me on how this game works?

Try not to overuse the healing power, as you can easily remove most of the challenge with it.
