Default Sonic 4, Success or Fail?

If this has already been posted, FORGIVE ME because I didn't know.

Anyway, there hasn't been a 2-D Sonic game for over a decade now. Us Sonic fans jumped for joy when we heard there would be a new Sonic game ( Kind of like Toy Story 3 ). SEGA has added a new way of attacking in Sonic 4, the homing Attack. Some people like it, some people hate it.

So what I'm asking is, do you think Sonic 4 is a Success or a Fail? Is it even worthy of being in the 2-D Sonic trilogy ( Sonic 1, 2, 3 and S&K ) ? Or is it just another failed Sonic game? In my opinion, I think Sonic 4 is great and should be in the trilogy of 2-D Sonic games. It feels pretty different with the homing attack, but if you can use it correctly you'll be flying threw the level.

Post your opinions on Sonic 4

You'll get a lot who say fail, but those are the people who still think that the Sega CD is a pinnacle of modern technology. The game has it's flaws, but it is good. The game has allegedly sold well, so all in all I'd say it has been a success at this point.

I love sonic 4. It's hard to say if my favorite is 1 or 4. I'm not really good at nitpicking the little stuff, it's just fun and I love it. Also I think the music is great.

I think it's hysterical the things that people will nitpick with this game... "sonic isn't as fast!!!!" (despite video evidence that he takes the same amount of time to get to full speed as in sonic 2) or "his jump physics are all wrong" (despite the fact that they're the same as have been in since SA1)...

Sega had to make two sets of gamers happy with this: Those who liked the original games and grew up on those as well as those who were first exposed with the SA series, heroes, etc. Not an easy task, and I think they succeeded.

It's artistically, creatively and genrally crap.

It's blatently obvious that someone at Sega tuned into the fact that fans were so despirate for another 2D sonic they would buy any old shit they could put out, but it's ok because it's in HD so it looks all crisp and pretty.

Throw a starving man a peanut out of your shit and he'll lap it up like it was a steak dinner.

If failing on both counts equals success then yes.

What they should have done is made a specific old school remake which is what most fans wanted, and kept new 'innovations' for another project.

I've never been a huge fan of the Sonic franchise anyway, but I strongly feel that Sega really pushed this out of their ass as a quick cash in.

Financially, of course it's a success. Very low production values makes it a cheap, low-risk project. And that, of course, also happens to be the problem with the game.

I think it sold pretty well, but that doesn't mean anything to the oldschool Sonic fans.
It just isn't the same, and it definitely doesn't belong anywhere near the classic Sonics. I don't think Sega is willing or capable of making a classic Sonic game for the fans.

It doesn't belong in the original trilogy. That was a different time, a different era, and those games just stand apart now. Even great fan made games like Mega Mix still don't have the feel those old games had.

With that said, I think Sonic 4 was alright. Nowhere near as good as the classics, but nowhere near as bad as the recent games.

Too bad they didn't study the old Sonic Advance games on GBA. I think those games came closest to getting the feel of the Genesis titles.

The physics are off (sonic has no momentum, he'll literally stop in his tracks if you're not constantly pushing forward) and the level designs suck. For me, the game failed on every level BUT visuals.

Yeah, I agree that Sonic Advance felt more like an actual Sonic 4. The first Sonic Advance though, Sonic Advance 2 was just...idk kinda boring and Sonic Advance 3... why would i need a partner? it just makes the game a lot cheaper. ( skipping the entire level by jumping really high, and using cream's chao )

I still haven't played Sonic 4, but it looks pretty bad.

    Sonic 4 - Episode 1

@ Making an average-to-good game with average-to-good gameplay = WIN

@ Making a true successor of Sonic 1,2,3 & Knuckles with the same gameplay = FAIL

So many people on this board had their minds made up long before the release. They decided to hate it from the first screenshot. It's a retro board, though, whaddya expect?

If they didn't want it to be judged that way, they should not have called it Sonic 4.
