Space Harrier 32X. Beat this for the shmup contest. Very nice, and ready made for nostalgia with pastels and clouds.

Finishing the year on a high: I just beat the single player campaign of Uncharted 3 for the PS3. Good times.

How does such a plot-driven game like Uncharted (insert sequel number) have anything else other than single-player 'campaign'? What has the world come to these days?

Brother and I beat Bare Knuckle III, lol at the gay guy.

Btw, what's the difference between the JAP and NTSC version that make the Jap version superior?

You haven't seen any of the zillions of posts about it? Or did you just ignore them all as I did? That gay guy you lolled at is. He can also be unlocked for play with a native code/performance rather than through a game genie or whatever's needed on SOR (something like this--I have no interest in playing as him). Some names too (Victy for Roo), along with forms of names (Garcia for Galsia). The difficulty is also apparently lower. There's probably a dedicated thread to their differences you could find, but in the end the difference is exaggerated.

#36 Limbo (PC)- Funky little, atmospheric game. Some tricky puzzles, and a great visual style. Shame it's so short though.

    41. Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole - Sega Genesis

'Happy to end the year with a Genesis title, and a great one at that, I might add. This game was exactly what I expected it to be. It was also a nice transition for me, having had a Zelda marathon prior to that. This game was very straight-forward and self-explanatory. It was the platforming portions that made it very difficult. Sometimes it required pixel-perfect moves just to move ahead; the kind that normally is added in a game just as a bonus round to get extras. The graphics were outstanding, and the story felt like a fresh take on the genre (I'll make it Action/Adventure/Semi-RPG). I was very surprised it had so many sexual innuendos, though; things that even nowadays would shock some young gamers. But playing it retrospectively as an adult, it felt just right. 'Just another example of a Genesis game that aimed for a more adult audience (and the best part of it is, it didn't even have to compromise in graphical design. The game was as cutsie as it gets. And that was awesome). 'Definitely a Grade A title for the Genesis. It's tough with its sadistic platforming elements, but after having finished it, it's definitely one of the best games for the system.

P.S.> 'Looking forward to Light Crusader now; hopefuly it's not as tough.

Good question. I don't really give a shit about the competitive multiplayer, it's not what I buy the game for, and I'll probably never bother with it. The coop mode could still be fun though.

    Talking

    Final update for 2011!!!!

    # 43 – Gunbird (PS1)

Looped the game with Marion, not the best character by any means. Fun shooter that's not as punishing as its sequel.

    # 44 – Prehistoric Isle in 1930 (PSP)

Great atmosphere and pretty damn hard to grasp due to the pod disintegrating upon taking damage. Looking forward to the sequel.

    # 45 – Rez (Dreamcast)

Went over 1 million points on the Direct Assault mode. Will try to improve on the PS2 version, using the TV yay!!

    # 46 – A Shooter (XBLIG)

Surprisingly fun little game that costs only 80 MSP. Nice explosions and dense bullet patterns.

    # 47 – Xexyz (NES)

Recommended by StarMist, this comes off as a decent blend of platforming and shmup.

    # 48 – Viewpoint (Neo Geo)

Unique game with sleek visuals and funky music. Should've received a sequel by now, I can't understand why none was ever made.

    # 49 – Recca (NES)

Played as part of the recent shmup contests in Sega-16. Doesn't live up to the hype, but it's fast and fun.

    # 50 – Darwin 4081 (Mega Drive)

Another one from the shmup contests. No slowdown, but no graphical frills either. I like it. Review for Sega-16 coming soon.

    # 51 – Shienryu (Saturn)

I finally managed to control rank in this little beast. The last boss fight is epic, it just feels so good to have wasted him.

    # 52 – Space Harrier arcade (PS2)

From the Space Harrier Complete Collection, a perfect conversion with autofire enabled. I don't like the analog option, I prefer to have complete control over the Harrier's position on screen.

    # 53 – Retro Force (PS1)

Overlong and somewhat tedious tilted vert with some eerie primitive visuals. Thanks to Zebbe for helping me get it.

    # 54 – Gekirindan (Saturn)

Another title from the Sega-16 shmup contests. Straightforward and fun, good music, but the Saturn's unfortunately not the best port of the game.

    # 55 – Sqoon (NES)

Forgotten and obscure underwater shooter that gets repetitive after a while, but still has its charm.

    50. Catrap (Game Boy)

I worked on this Game Boy puzzler in the interstices of a week-long Christmas visit to my family. Take a bit of Boulder Dash, a bit of Lolo, and all of Pitman, and you've got it -- but the most crucial feature is the rewind button, which turns endless repetitive trial-and-error into a far more pleasant process.

This doesn't make the puzzles any less tricky, though -- of Catrap's 100 levels, there are about a dozen that accounted for the vast majority of the 16-17 hours it took to beat the game (most of the others took under 10 minutes). Given that I bought the game (with manual!) at a yard sale for just a couple bucks, I certainly got my money's worth, and (mostly) enjoyed doing so.

The action is much easier, but the hardest puzzles are probably a little bit tougher (the difficulty is extremely uneven). The puzzles tend to be somewhat more self-contained, though, and I don't remember getting lost as much in Light Crusader.

Still, overall it's comparable, and "PENUMBRA" (which is probably Light Crusader's most questionable puzzle) is about as obscure as some of the rooms in Landstalker's "strip mall dungeon" (the one where you cross the underground river).

Both are great games, of course. Landstalker is arguably the better and more polished product overall, but Light Crusader's music is probably still my favorite on the Genesis, and it's got a great sense of humor and an attractive aesthetic. "OOPS!"
