    Default Best Mario Kart

Which is the best version of this game?

I personally haven't played much of the series, but Im interested in picking one up for one of my Nintendo systems, mainly to play with my kids(Dont have a Wii yet, and my 64/SNES stay in a closet/storage). Which would you suggest?
I don't play old stuff for nostalgia, I play old stuff because the games are better.

You didn't put Mario Kart DS on the Poll!! But out of what you have, the SNES version is the best!

I knew I'd be the only person to choose Double Dash I don't see it as the "red head step-child" of the series at all. I thought the combining of characters went a long way in extending strategy, and it was the first game to introduce different carts for different characters.

But of course, we must be talking about console only versions. Because we ALL know Mario Kart DS is the best in the series

It's a tie for me. Super Mario Kart or Mario Kart DS. One you can play on a TV the other on the go.

Mario Kart 64. Second best is Mario Kart DS.

I just have a tough time going back to mode-7 racing when compared to the 3D entries. I know everyone keeps Super Mario Kart on a pedestal, but it just doesn't hold up that well. Super Circuit still looks great, but I prefer the turning in DS.

Actually, I didn't care for Super Circuit, but I still love the original. I'm not ruling out the power of nostalgia, however.

Super Mario Kart sucks. Mario Kart 64 and later is where its at!
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

I always did enjoy Super Circuit (especially since it has all the tracks from Super MK), but at times it made me hunger for MK64 (which is partly why I eventually bought my own N64).

As far as I'm concerned, all the Mario Karts except Wii are excellent. I voted for MK64 because it holds more of a 'forbidden fruit' kind of nostalgia since I never got to play it much as a kid. I remember SMK fondly but I could play it anytime, so it doesn't stick in my memory as much as 64. Double Dash is of course technically the best but it doesn't hold much nostalgic value for me.

It always boggled my mind that they never totally replicated the battle mode from 64. Double Dash is maybe the closest they got, with some extra modes thrown in, but the arenas were FAR better in 64.
