I enjoyed it. It was something different. Sonic and gang actually racing on foot and not in a car (Except Dr. Robotnik and Amy IIRC). Once I got used to the controls I became pretty good at it.

Yeah! I really wonder that as well. The game seemed pretty challenging to me to get all of the coins and other stuff.
I havent played it since Sonic Gems came out, but I remember then even having to really search for all the coins.
And then there were the extra characters and mirrored reverse tracks...

It's not that tough! I popped it in a month or so ago and completed all of the challenges within a few days of casual sessions. Really, it's just a matter of knowing where the Emeralds and coins are. That and some practice. Oh, and I would definitely recommend using a 3D controller if you've got one. And what self-respecting Saturn owner doesn't have one of those?

Its a 3D Saturn game from 1997, what did you expect it to look like? Uncharted 3? For the time though it looks great, it looks almost on par with the N64.

I personally liked Sonic R. It was a fun Sonic game when we were desperate for anything Sonic on the Saturn.

The Saturn version has its own look and vibe going for it, but the PC and Gems version are the best (the latter being based on the former) thanks to their extended draw distances (optional on the PC version, turned on by default in the GC port) and their other options like Weather, where for example, setting it to SNOW freezes the water so you can walk on it.

My strategy is to start by getting all the emeralds to get Super Sonic (as he is arguably the best character), then aquire all the coins/characters with him last.

The Saturn version is the best version for me for one reason. Radiant Emerald is done with Translucent polygons which gives it a very nice look. The PC and Gems version for some reason made them opaque with seizure colors going on. And since I'm colorblind that makes it very hard for me to see the track every now and then.

    Saturn:

    PC:

With my color blindness to me it appears every 2 seconds or so the track goes black and I can't really see it. Plus the seizure effect eventually gives me a massive headache.

Sonic R is not a good game by any standards. BUT, it's still a Sonic game, and as bad as it is, you can tell they were trying to do something for the fans.

That's why I like it so much, it isn't so much of a racing game to me as much as it really is a love letter from Sonic Team to their fans.

The worst feature for me is the menus. They are slow, and the fact that savefiles are not auto-loaded does not help either. But the music is one-of-a-kind.

The best of the default characters is Knuckles; purely because of his gliding and good handing.

Amy is useless, as is Eggman/Robotnik; Tails has fast acceleration but is slow and the other/secret characters are just pimped out version of the main cast.

Hey Sonic R owners - put the disc into your PC for some lovely high-res 800x600 desktop wallpapers!
