The US PC/PS2 Servers got shut down last March.
The US 360 servers are still up and going, you can get the game on XBL Games on Demand.
The Japanese PC/PS2 servers are still up and going and are about 1 year ahead of the US servers in content. However PS2 support is being dropped in March.
Yeah, I've played PSU (PS2) and it was a fun experience for a couple of months, but there's a limit to how many times a person is willing to play the same maps over and over again. You'd get new enemies on the same maps, but it was still the same experience. I had a much better time playing Star Wars: Galaxies, than I did PSU or PSO. Still, I'm not a fan of paying a monthly fee to play one game online, and it's the one reason I've never played WOW, or the countless other MMOs out there.
I'd have more interest in another PSO/PSU, if they had a one-time fee, but Sega isn't about to do that.
A Black Falcon: no, computer games and video games are NOT the same thing. Video games are on consoles, computer games are on PC. The two kinds of games are different, and have significantly different design styles, distribution methods, and game genre selections. Computer gaming and console (video) gaming are NOT the same thing."
There's a pretty decent amount of maps in PSU, far more than PSO ever had. Since you played the PS2 version for only a few months I'm guessing you missed out on a lot of the content that was later released like this:
A decent amount of people still play it on 360. There are a enough people that most of the main hot spots are always packed.
Man, I feel so... out of the loop.
The only MMORPG I ever played was Ragnarok Online from 2004 to 2008.Much of my life was spent on that... I really really, in hindsight, wish I spent more of that time hacking apart Shining Force instead (And, among other things, actually got the motivation to learn 68k ASM properly).
Might have to give PSU a go.
Less talk more action!
I've only played PSO:BB and this was about almost 2 years ago on the schthack server. I've been late to the game.

It's not like WoW it's like space Diablo. I never really considered it an MMO in the sense that the word is used today. It's still fun and addictive in its own way. The reason why WoW is so popular has little to do with the game itself beyond it was the first really popular MMO. People invest so much time and money into an MMO and meet friends and build up a virtual social life that even if there are MMOs out there with better gameplay they don't want to leave the game that they're invested in or the friends that they've made.
Actually Sega has announced PSO2 with alpha testing beginning this summer. No word on if it's going to be pay-to-play yet or not.I'd have more interest in another PSO/PSU, if they had a one-time fee, but Sega isn't about to do that.
I also play the original PSO version Blue Burst on Schtserv for free (And Sega themselves released the game as freeware before shutting down their servers). It's pretty fun, check it out.
Back on the ORIGINAL topic: I don't care about people who don't want to respect old games. I need those people to exist to sell their older games so I can have them.
Nice thread hijack going on here. Carry on.
Does Monster Hunter qualify as a mmorpg? that's the only game of it's kind I was actually able to get into. It had/has monotonous stuff like mining for ore and fishing to get $/materials to make weapons/armor but the monster hunting gameplay did require actual dodging and more skill than standing in one spot and hitting a button over and over while occasionally healing, point is it seemed like an actual game. Plus there were alternate missions like stealing dinosaur eggs/etc which helped break up the monotony of the monster hunting, although there was a decent variety of things to kill. (speaking in past tense because this is the PS2 version, I know Tri was released recently for the wii, which I might check out soon).

"Sort of."
The animations are also boring and there's no hit response.
Wanna see what mmos with fun combat really look like?
Go to 4:00, note that it's NOT a dungeon.
If you want something that's already been released:
Full hit response + Awesome skill animations.
It's hard to describe how much fun the combat was in this game... the slightest provocation (like... stealing a single mob), usually resulted in a PK, which then resulted in a massive guild war, and then a massive multi guild war when all the allied guilds of each side joined the fun.
Not a full MMO, there's no world map so to speak, just towns and dungeons, but the combat is unbeatable.
Me, it's actually when I got my Dreamcast.
Everybody were like "Hey what the f- is a Dreamcast?! Xbox 360 is so much better, I don't even know that system!".
'Ya, then I invited friends, they tried it, we played Crazy Taxi, House of the Dead, Resident Evil C.V., Man 24 Hours... and voilą!
We had so much fun, that was awesome!![]()

In college my friends and I used to hook up old systems in the rec room of our dorm just to fish for people's reactions. Actually ended up making a lot more friends that way.
