Yuck Doom 32X (wow, I played it finally...)

I recently acquired this along with my 32X (was included in the lot). After seeing you guys talk about this port for the last year I was very interested to see what all the hubub was about. Wow, I can't believe the positive things that y'all said about this port. I've seen countless numbers of y'all claim that this was a very worthy alternative to the PC version.... wow, how much more wrong could y'all have been.

    1. It's in Low Graphics mode. (anyone who's played the PC version knows there are two modes, and this port is done with the Low Graphics option which is TERRIBLE looking... hell, I don't even think people on decently fast 386s had to play it looking like this)

    2. The frame rate is a joke. Frames in the teens on the first map with hardly anything going on... lol, I can only imagine how poorly the game runs past the 1st map. I don't even know how anyone can play the game with framerates in the teens... it's beyond me.

    3. As if the low graphics mode and piss poor frame rates were bad enough, this version also uses barely half of the screen.

    4. Need I say more...

I played the first two maps and it was one of the biggest struggles I've ever encountered during a game. I literally could not force myself to play through this game much less give it an ounce of the credit this board has given it. To be a Gamer and call this port of Doom, "worth playing" much less any other ill fated praise is insane.

I see that the game CIB goes for $20-30... my copy is literally MINT, the PINS look brand new and the case looks brand new. It's obvious why it didn't get played
    Anyone interested in my copy?

This comes up every few months. Is 32x the best version of Doom to ever be created? No. Is it a great 32x game? Yes.

Considering the 32x has 2mbit (not bytes) of ram, I think it looks rather good. Some shading (like Jag Doom) would have gone a long way though.

I found the frame rate to be rather strong point for this game. Compared to other early console 3D games (the SNES super FX title, Metal Head, and some of the Jag stuff) it's rather smooth. It's very playable.

What planet are you from? How you can say the game is playable with frame rates in the teens and under is beyond me. Because of the frame rates, the game is unplayable which makes it a terrible game.

Those who claim this game is playable should be ashamed of themselves for lying to other gamers.

Damn! I'd hate to see you review games like The Eidolon or Rescue on Fractulus...

"These games are pathetic! A mere 6 FPS which any 386 could run ten times as fast!!"

15 FPS is plenty playable to someone who isn't obsessed with framerate, as you appear to be from several threads you've created, this just being the latest.

The 32X can actually play the first level faster, but they opted for a set frame rate for the whole game to keep later levels with more stuff from looking worse in comparison.

I played this for the first time a few weeks ago. The game is completely playable. It's not the ideal way to play Doom by a long shot but it is far from unplayable. I honestly found it rather enjoyable.

What do you expect from fan boys? The 32x is a joke and not worth the space it takes up in any collection.

It's still better than Saturn Doom. Doom on the Saturn makes the 32X verison look like it's running at 60 fps.

After playing this port of Doom on the 32X, I can safely say that anyone who says this port is "playable" is a fool. You can have your opinion by all means, Stealthninja, but I think it's unfair for Doom fans to see your opinion and then think there's a playable version of the game on the 32X to which I completely disagree.

If anyone was to ever inquire about this game, I think it's only fair to that person to tell them that the Frame Rates are in the teens and under 100% of the time. The port feels like slow motion.

It does a few games very well.

Saying Doom on the 32X is playable is akin to saying eating rat poison won't kill you.

christ... that sounds scary... the 32x port is unplayable as it is... how in the world is it that the Saturn didn't have enough HP to do a 100% PC port????????????????????????????????????????

Stop pushing your opinion as fact, it's really annoying and insulting.

I dont know what planet "OldSchool" is on a framerate in the teens is perfectly playable and the game runs at a fast pace for a 1994 console shooter. 2nd the graphics are less pixelated than the Pc version on the low mode, they are in between the high and the low mode.
Third the controls are good and it plays like the Pc version, the Pc version is fun and so is the 32x version.

Please change your name to NewSchool because you clearly don't have a clue about anything oldschool.

Sorry but Doom 32X is very playable and has a decent frame rate for the hardware.

Saturn Doom on the other hand is an even worse rush job. It's a port of the PS1 version which is a port of the Jaguar version which is a port of the PC version. So the Saturn port is a port, of a port, of a port. It's just awful:

Then 3DO Doom you have to lower the screen size to even smaller than the 32X just to get a frame rate that is about the same if not worse than the Saturn port:

32X Doom by comparison is an amazing port.

Actually it goes like this. Jaguar Doom is compiled from the NeXT code, and 32X doom is a port of the Jaguar version.

I forgot where I read that but I'm searching for it right now.

    Found it: http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Atari_Jaguar
