I'm planning to upgrade to the newest version of vBulletin to fix this, but it's complicated and costs $200. The other option was to take the forum down completely, so this was the lesser of two evils.
Unfortunately it means any external links into threads in this forum no longer work. I had a saved link to one of my threads which now fails and takes me to the sega16 home page saying the forum is gone. I was devo but decided to try accessing the forums through the front page community menu and was pleased to find it was still here under this IP address.
Of the course the fun wasn't over though as chrome treated it as a different site and wouldn't remember my password.. I couldn't remember what it was off the top of my head and started to clock up the failed attempts getting close to that limit of 5 before account lock. Request a password reset.. got no email so thats not working either. So in the end I looked up my saved passwords in chrome ands found the old sega 16 entry and was finally able to get in there! Chrome didn't give me any option save the password at this new location (probably becuase of the not secure thing). So yeah.. wonder how many other people haven't returned due to similar issues..
I was pretty serious. We no longer have the webmaster who installed the forum, so vBulletin will have to do it and they charge for that in addition to the cost of the upgrade.
To be honest, I'm not really concerned with who hasn't returned. My goal is to keep the forum alive for as long as possible to preserve its history. Just about everyone had already left for discord long before the server change, so we didn't lose that much traffic. Lots of people have come and gone over the past 18 years, and what's important is that there be something for them to come back to.
How much is needed for the cost of the upgrade? I am willing to donate. Appropriate for Giving Tuesday.
Melf, I really don't want to see this go away. The review I just submitted means I want to start contributing more regularly again. If there's any way we could all help you with the costs myself, as well as many others I'm sure it would be more than willing to help out you have a really good thing going that needs to persevere.
