That is the frame blending. I don't know why it's labeled the way it is, but I was disappointed when I found out it didn't actually control the sharpness. Turning it all the way to sharp removes the blending entirely, whereas soft seems to emulate the original Gameboy for some reason (lots of motion blur).

The F-Zero games are good choices to test the frame blending, as the map uses flicker transparency.

I'm posting this because Joe mentioned in an episode that Space Harrier and Afterburner on 32 x run at 30 fps, they are fast past games, in fact me getting on stage 4 on space harrier felt like being on crack for 15 minutes but why can't the 32 x do 60 fps of those games yet this 8 bit system can ?

Well for one there's like maybe 1/8th the amount of screen detail there AT MOST. I don't think the Turbo runs After Burner at 60fps. The objects all still approach in coarse steps of maybe 15fps and when there is scaling (the refuel jet or the carrier) it's extremely slow. The 32X is using software scaling on every single object. Like I said in the video, it has no hardware support for things like scaling and rotation.

Yep, in a scaler game the framerate of the scaling objects should be considered the actual framerate, not the static background movement or main sprite movements. I still doubt that After Burner in the Arcade scaled at 60FPS, but only some super powerful capture artist could definitively prove that either way.

Fairly certain After Burner & Space Harrier Arcade do not scale at 60fps, but only fairly.

Only the Saturn version scales at 60 fps, as an extra option. The arcade version doesn't.

You're thinking of Out Run. That has a 60fps option whereas the arcade is only 30. After Burner is 60fps in the arcade and Saturn. Well definitely the Saturn. I don't trust MAME much one way or the other.

Do you think OutRun looks and plays better in 60fps on the Saturn? I've purchased Sega Ages, which is why I'd like to know.

I thought the PS2 Outrun was in 60fps.. Been a while, but technically being interlaced it was 30fps, so I don't know.
Customized Sega Genesis Model 1 - VA3. Energy efficient with buck converters instead of LM7805's.

It's much much smoother in 60 FPS mode.

That one's entirely remade and looks like shit. You can still have 60 independent moments in time with interlaced footage so to me that's 60fps (I don't give a shit about fields vs frames). I don't remember for sure if it is 60fps or not but I think it is.

Because the 32x doesn't really have a video processor. It has a frame buffer (excluding the Genesis layers). The CPU must scale, position, and blit (copy) ALL graphics to the frame buffer. 32x RAM runs at full speed, but it's small amount. So anything accessed via rom by the 32x cpu is slowed down quite a bit (and even the Genesis cpu can stall it further if it's accessing rom).
