mind you, this is my complaint with many western open world games: there's a sandbox with seemingly infinite things to do, none of which matter & culminate in a drab experience that makes me want to spend time elsewhere. i'll casually play a GTA game & wreck shit for a while like anyone, but nothing about the world or characters compels to me see it though.
for example, early in the PS3 gen, i was starved for games & put over 100 hours into Fallout 3 - i enjoyed exploring every corner, but the more i did, the more the illusion fell apart for me. i don't mind repeating assets/etc but say, a morality system that allows me to literally nuke a town of refugees for a rich guy's amusement, but then i can be a good guy again if i give enough bums bottled water? that reeks of design afraid to let shitty players/decisions have actual consequences, and makes everything you do after that point feel especially hollow.
now, take Red Dead Redemption: i love western settings, and i loved Marston. i had a blast the whole way through & even tried the shitty DLC because i wanted more. maybe years of mediocre RPG's growing up burned me out, but the first sign of my lady/my lord type tolkein setting wankery and i run for the hills...unless, you know, it goes lovecraftian like Berserk. then you've got my fucking attention.
