Someone liking Final Soldier better then Super Star Soldier. That's a first.
Good episode. Makes me wanna break out the ol roms and have a go for an afternoon!
What was the point of the Super Grafx existing?
Supposed to be a Mega Drive killer, I think. Didn't quite work out that way!![]()
"Two and two continue to make four, in spite of the whine of the amateur for three, or the cry of the critic for five." - James McNeill Whistler
There was a market for niche consoles and the SuperGrafx with the Power Console was aiming for a market like the Neo Geo, only more grounded.
But by the time they finally got it onto store shelves, the initially delayed CD-ROM was already successful enough that devs were quickly moving projects to CD or cancelling modest HuCard games in favor of more abitious CD games.
The PC Engine had also demonstrated by then that it was already good enough to be successful, while the SuperGrafx pushed into arcade territory with its overkill sprite ability.
It's still surprising that the SuperGrafx hardware wasn't included in the Duo systems, although it is part of the PC-FX (similar to the 32X setup). They could have also still released the Power Console for PC Engine.

Its like saying the Saturn continue to perform after the 32X. Trouble is you start to mess around retail and 3rd party and lose focus. Both huge cock up by both corps that made them look they didn't know what they were doing or what the consumer wanted and where I can not see case for either system to came out basically.

Thanks to the said 'old video magazines' that 1st heard of the likes of the PC-Eng and import shops that stock the unit?; without such mags, I never would have imported a PC-Eng along with R-Type way back in 90 (when I 1st imported my unit, yes I was late to the party) Like the 32X , the Super Grax just seemed a waste of time money and really knew what it was and also seemed to be a split between its own user base rather that its rivals and started the rot for me and for the life of me I can't think how NEC even thought the Super Graxf 2D hardware would be good enough to go up against the Saturn and PS hardware.
NEC was like pioneers with leading and cutting edge hardware with the PC-Eng and Super CD-Rom2 (so far ahead of others it wasn't even funny) after the Super Grax their console Hardware seemed a step backward (yes the GT was something else) rather than forwards, even the size of the Super Grax just seemed so wrong and a step backward. BTW I'm so sorry I have an opinion and like the Snes more than the MD![]()

Most "retro" game fans assume that platforns only work one way and there are certain rules and that everythibg was done the same way as Sega/Nintendo bitd. They see "NEC" on a box or hardware, completely ignore the "HE System" logo and start talking about the PC Engine being NEC's console.
NEC made nothing from PCE software sales. All licensing fees and I believe HuCard manufacturing was Hudson Soft's, because they designed everything. Other than various NEC labels putting out their own software for the PC Engine, NEC made all of their PCE related money from hardware/accessory sales. They were also one of the biggest electronics manufacturers in the world and had a 99% share of the Japanese computer market.
Once they got rolling producing PCE hardware, it wasn't a major investment to put out variations of existing hardware or even all kinds of unique items that would be cost prohibitive to most other companies. The SuperGrafx only adds a second copy of the same VDP of the PC Engine and some extra ram to compensate for the poorly designed method of making use of the second VDP. For all we know, NEC never even took a loss on the SuperGrafx, but even if they did, it was still just a tiny part of the big picture.

Could never see the point of the SuperGrafx or 32X and they only seemed to drive a wedge between their own respective fan base. Everything about it, felt wrong not just the spec's but even the size of the system. PC-Eng went from a stunning tiny little system to an ugly monster that looked more like the bastardised US TurboGrafx rather than the ultra cool small, stylish and powerful PC-Eng most of us importing a PC-Eng were used too . It was a mess up andthen to think its 2D chipset would be enough to go up against the PS or Saturn with the PCFX was another cock up along with wanting the unit Hardware to be more focused on FMV than with real time GFX hardware was another
Think you're being pedantic over NEC, but never mind.
