Probably the thought of being an old man flying a rocking chair through the sky, blasting enemies with his trusty banjo, and using his sedate canine companion as both a revolving shield and additional firepower.

Seriously, Phalanx is a fine game. It's much better than its notorious box art might suggest.

Now if I KNEW that the old banjo man was the pilot, I would probably force myself to enjoy it. That would rock!

Thanks, I definitely appreciate it. It's always nice when people notice the work that goes into the show.

I have not yet played Macross or Flying Hero. I am thinking of getting a Super Everdrive to help cover games like this, but the fact that so many SNES games use extra chips and therefore would not work has always dissuaded me. If the games themselves are decently priced I will pick them up via eBay or whatever.

I believe all of the latest Super Everdrives have the DSP support built in, at least some of them do. That would only leave SFX games, I'm not sure if Krikzz isn't experimenting with including one of those system on a chip dilly bobs so he can eventually emulate all of the extra chips.

    Oh hell yeah it is!

That one, alongside Super SWIV/Firepower 2000 and (maybe) Imperium are my favorites.

I feel a little out of the loop. I understood the Compile joke and even got a pretty good laugh out of it, but I don't know what it's specifically referring to. What is Compile best known for?

    Puyo Puyo (and MUSHA).
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

I thought Utopia: Creation of a Nation was a pretty cool game for its time. Yeah, it hasn't aged well, but it's still an enjoyable game.
A Black Falcon: no, computer games and video games are NOT the same thing. Video games are on consoles, computer games are on PC. The two kinds of games are different, and have significantly different design styles, distribution methods, and game genre selections. Computer gaming and console (video) gaming are NOT the same thing."

I'll never know because Dave will never unseal it. I guess it's more fun when it's sealed.

The ship feels like it's swimming in goo. I changed the cartridge for Dragon Spirit. Now, there's a NES shmup!

For the SNES, the shmups I usually go back to are R-Type III: The Third Lightning, Space Megaforce, and Aerofighters. I pick up and play the likes of Phalanx, Bio-Metal and Super EDF from time to time as well. I generally leave Super R-Type and Gradius III alone though. Way too much slowdown, and I have basically perfect ports of the arcade games they're based off of.

Yeah, don't play the NES version. This is how you play Gradius:

The absolute best part of the latest episode is at 14:27 through 14:34. Joe's shirt clearly says Turbo Crack during this segment and I am certain this was intentional. Also, Joe, Dave, do you two use one of these?

No idea what Dave uses but I still use something given to me by a past GF. Works fine, no need to replace it. All I can tell you is that it is light blue in color.

Yeah, but Sonic Wings Special has stages from the other games as well. I've never played the arcade original, but Sonic Wings 1 on SNES is (surprisingly to me) a damn fine game, and worth owning the Japanese version since it's not that expensive. However, if you were only going to get one Sonic Wings game, get Special, it is the best. It can also be had from PSN cheap!
