I was thinking more along the facial detail and moving fingers.

Those shots are interesting though. I think it actually looks better without the lighting. Without the lighting you can't see the seams where the polygons meet, which gives the illusion of smoother more rounded models.

Better textures usually does create that illusion. I don't think any 32-bit fighting games renders fingers. Somebody feel free to prove me wrong though.

Virtua Fighter 2 definitely renders them. I know the Saturn version does. One place I always notice it is Akira, in his idle animation you can see the fingers move.

Look closely at Akira's hands at around 45-55 seconds:

Okay, I should have been more clear. Each character in VF2 has its own hand model, but the fingers are not all individually rendered as they are in Dreamcast games forward. Akira has all four main digits as one block that bends at the knuckles and a thumb. Some of the other characters have interesting hand models with similar mid digit bending, but they still don't render each finger separately.

At the close up it does look like you can see the sides of each finger, though that could just be really good texture use. Also Lion's fingers move rather uniquely as well. Still I don't remember seeing that level of details in the Tekken games, I remember they usually just had a static fist or a static claw for a hand.

Yeah, that would be Yu Suzuki's attention to detail versus Namco's attention to copying Sega games.

When I get motivated, I've got all of the Tekken games for the PS1, plus the PS2 game with the Arcade versions. I'm going to do a simple progress video of all of them alone. Then I might go back and make comparison videos with the VF games.

Yeah, I'd say in general Saturn 3D fighters have aged better than PS1 3D fighters. The high frame rates and higher resolution for many of them really makes a huge difference. While Virtua Fighter 2 does lack lighting, I'd say it's a plus for it as the lighting in your earlier shots as well as in The Tekken games really makes the seams for the polygons stick out. Without the lighting Virtua Fighter 2's models get a bit of blending going on, and don't look as blocky.

I forgot to mention Rival Schools in an earlier post. Yeah, it's simplistic, but it's a hell of a lot of fun when playing with a friend.

A Black Falcon: I too think that the Fighter's Destiny series and Mace are some of the N64's best 3D fighters.

Mace is specially really cool, mostly for the kickass names (seriously, Lord Deimos? Who wouldn't love that?)

I really didn't play too many 3d fighters during the 32 bit era but I did enjoy a few. for sega saturn I liked last bronx, fighting vipers, virtua fighter 2, fighters megamix. for playstation I enjoyed beast wars transmetals, rival schools, fatal fury wild ambition.
