Can someone test that level select code and tell me if it works for you? I have tried it over and over, but I can never get it to work. I just want to know if I'm doing something wrong or if the code is bogus.

I'm playing Battletoads right now, thanks to this thread. I'm at level 7, Volkmire's Inferno. So far I've died twice: once in level 4 (the ice level) when I misjudged a jump onto one of those green moving platforms, and once in level 6 (the snake level) when I hit a mid-air spike ball for failure to jump fast enough. I got only 12 extra lives in level 2. I'm getting a little rusty I suppose. Still, no outrageous difficulty thus far.

After taking a little break, I beat level 7, losing one life in the process. Those missiles are hard to judge. Now I'm on level 8, and my score's maxed out. It's annoying how you don't get one last extra life when your score maxes out. Oh well. As I recall, level 8 is where the difficulty starts ramping up.

I got through level 8 without losing any lives. Now I'm in the middle of level 9, Terra Tubes. I've lost three lives, one to pesky sharks and two to one of those gear things that chases you (underwater part, your swim speed is annoyingly slow). Now I'm having a hard time with this section with the one-hit kill ducks. The respawn point is right before a 1up, so I'm not actually losing any lives, but this is frustrating after 12 tries.

Finally beat that part, and Rat Race. I lost 6 lives in Rat Race, evenly distributed between being killed by the gassers and being killed by not winning the last race. That was a bit frustrating. After, I beat Clinger Winger without incident. And now, hell...

God damn, this level. It's amazing how much more difficult this is than the rest of the game. I've made it to the first checkpoint. It took me 6 lives to get here, two from those green cloud guys and the rest from the screen's refusal to scroll down. Way unfair and frustrating. I've now lost one more from "falling", and one from being blown away by that face thing. Two lives left.

And game over. I didn't even make it back to that face guy until my last life. I got to the second face, then dropped to my death after he left. Urgh. The floor was there a second ago. Welp, time to use a continue.

GOD DAMN IT. Immediately after continuing, I paused it to go to the bathroom, and when I game back, it was frozen. Wow.

Needless to say, I won't be restarting right now. But, in conclusion, only The Revolution is really ridiculous. Terra Tubes and Rat Race are notably frustrating, and the rest of the game is not that hard at all. Challenging yes, but very manageable.

I can't get it to work either, and I've tried different ways of putting it in.

Nice job getting far into the game. I hope I can make it there eventually, but the level select code not working REALLY sucks. Who wants to play through that damn 3rd and 4th stage every time? I still haven't been able to get past the 4th stage, I can make it almost to the end so I should be able to beat it if I keep trying.

Here's me beating the 3rd stage while dieing twice. The first death was a stupid mistake. 2nd death was "legit" . This was my first time playing in a while.

I'd like to make a video of myself playing the game, but I don't have a good video capture device.

Dazzle is a good one. I got mine for a decent price on eBay, around $30 iirc. All you need to buy after that is 3 splitters which are dirt cheap. Only thing is it doesn't have S-video or HDMI. The HDMI Dazzle is a bit more money, not sure if they make a S-video one.

I just played some more and still can't beat that damn ice level. I'm finding it a lot more difficult than the speed bikes.

Yes, a model 2 Genesis. It could be the splitters I'm using, not sure. I know it decreases the quality on my TV when I'm using them, but the video comes out in normal quality.

Battletoads is one of the games that are very hard but still very fun to play. There are several places that feel unfair, but it's nowhere near as hard and frustrating, as say, Megaman. Battletoads is usually quite fair and the fact that you can stack up on lives like crazy helps a lot. I've beaten it with savestates on Fusion and I've been to the terra tubes with real hardware. I'm going to beat the game quite soon, when I find the time to practice some more.

The arcade version looks badass at least.

No, it's the model 2 that sounds bad, not the splitters (which might be responsible for further quality loss, but I highly doubt it'd be noticeable).
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

I hate the model 1. It's so big and fugly. I know the sound is superior though.

I still maintain Battletoads on Genesis was a unnecessary port. Everyone and their mother had a NES so they could play Battletoads and the graphics were fine as is and I highly doubt a lot of people were clamouring for the same game with slightly better graphics. Maybe they were hoping a Genesis port would tone down the difficulty significantly but it didnt hence its a unnecessary port.

But it did tone down the difficulty. You start with 5 lives instead of 3, the controls are more responsive (the turbo tunnel is easier because you can move faster), and they made it easier to rack up lives in the second level.

It was still hard to me. I said "significantly."
