    Default Help with windows 2000

I have an old windows 2000 computer that I like to goof around on.

It has 2 USB ports. I had a spare wireless USB adapter laying around, so I connected it to the computer and installed the drivers. The wireless card in question is a "Dell Wireless 1450 Dual-band (802.11a/b/g) USB2.0 Adapter". Since windows 2000 has no built in wireless utility (or so I know of), I had to use the provided utility to connect to the network. It connected without a problem. I went to the network connections under the control panel, and I saw an Icon that said "Local Area Connection", and the device associated with it was the wireless device, and it said it was connected. I don't know exactly where to start but, I went to the default built-in Windows Internet Explorer, and I tried to go to Google, but it keeps saying "Page not found". And every time I start the browser, it says I need to create an internet account, but, all the info it wants pertains to a dial-up connection, and not a LAN connection.

How do I make windows use the wireless network adapter, instead of a dial-up connection?

Next time that setup thingy comes up, tell it you want to manually set up the account, tell it to use LAN, tell it you don't want to set up an internet mail account.

I would recommend toasting that and installing a modern os... That ish just isn't secure or stable anymore, IMO. If you don't want to spend cash, load up some ubuntu.

Glad you got it working though!!

Windows 2000's damn stable. Security is a bit iffy at this point though as Microsoft winds down the patches.

Windows 2000 is a great OS. But many things nowadays just blindly check for XP+ which is sad. There is some Windows XP fakE update stuff available though. But other than that, windows 2000 is a very great OS.

Not to mention the fact that XP is just 1 year younger than 2k :P

Yeah, Win2k is at least more stable than Windows 98SE is. 2K feels like a lightweight version of XP with less software support but fewer problems.

XP is directly based on 2000. Most of the changes were the fisher price "baby's first operating system" theme and the associated idiot dialog boxes. "Oh no! You just clicked on something. Clicking things can be BAD! Are you sure you meant to do that?"
