Okay, that made me laugh I've read that Nintendo's sales are down across the board, and the 3DS sales are especially poor. They need a complete refresh of their handheld lineup if they want to remain current. A 3D facelift to the DS just isn't going to cut it.

They you're a sucker. Nintendo has never sold a console at a loss.

Seems like Nintendo is making a decent amount of change eh? That's over 146 dollars and while i'm sure Nintendo doesn't make 146 dollars off of the 3DS they sure as hell aren't selling it at a loss.

Yes if you count R&D but thats ridiculous. The units themself each sell for more than they cost to make. So yes I guess im calling you a sucker. Sony is the only company who has always sold their consoles at a complete lost. Microsoft followed in that footstep too.

Correction: AND ten free NES games. Assuming that NES games sell for $5 a piece and GBA games, when available, will sell for at least $6 (probably closer to eight) I'm feeling good about the return I'm getting on my $80 investment.

Oh, and a hearty LOL at all the people in this thread who think it's outrageous for a company to (gasp!) MAKE MONEY on their products!!!

Look, if Nintendo makes 200 consoles and sells 50 of them in the first year, and the profit of that doesn't cover the manufacturing and marketing cost of the 200, that is selling at a loss. You guys think that R & D, leasing factory space, truck costs and maintenance, advertising and all the other expenses don't count.

You are not being entirely honest with your assessment though. Unlike the Wii, that made gamers use the Wiimote/nunchuk (in its early life), the 3ds allows you to make the choice of whether or not to use the 3d. As the life of the Wii progressed, different controlling option(s) were more readily available. The 3ds had this from day one.

People are not rejecting this system because of the 3d. The price tag and lackluster library take the blame for the hesitation when purchasing this system. Handhelds haven't been cheap for a while unless of course you look at ones that have been on the market for years. Remember the price of the DS and PSP when they launched seven years ago? Is the $100 increase worth it?

This. It's not hard to figure out that there are other factors such as R&D, promotion, and sustained life of a console help to determine whether or not the console is sold at a true loss.

Moving on... while the 10 free NES and 10 free GBA downloads is a nice olive branch to offer existing owners, it does feel a little like the 5 dollar coupons during the end of the 32x's life. I'd be stupid to believe that, even with all of the company's cash on hand & liquid assets, that they're not in any sort of financial trouble this quarter, but I'm also pulling for them to have this hail mary of sorts work out in their favor.

I'll probably be picking one up close to Christmas, once the smoke clears.

They do count but, not in unit profit which is what we're talking about. R&D is already done, factories are already owned and marketing has to be done on anything. Those are seperate cost they are already taken into account. The fact is that they've never sold hardware at a lose. Sony does all things you mentioned plus on top of that loses money on selling the actual hardware. Sony lost upwards of $350 per unit when the ps3 first came out. They lost even more once they dropped it to a reasonable price. They didnt start breaking even until the slim.

Obviously it would be wise to wait because you KNOW they are gonna release a new model that will be better in some stupid way...just like how I got stuck with a fat ds...

If the system is falling short of expectations, there's little chance a newer model will be developed or released...

Yeah... But if you keep waiting and waiting... You're never gonna play anything... Imagine if you waited and didn't buy the fat ds.. Then the dslite came out, naa better wait, then the dsi came out, naaa better wait, then the dsiXL came out, naaa better wait, then the 3DS came out... Naa better wait... Then you wouldn't of played anything for the past 7 years!!!

And now you want to wait on the NEXT thing? 3DSXL?? I don't think they are gonna do that, mainly because for the 3D to work correctly, you have to be a certain distance, and if the made a bigger screen, you would have to hold it further away for it to work, and you can only hold that DS so far away!

That was kind of my point.
