I don't know what there is to champion Sonic 3 over Sonic 1. S&K at least has Knuckles, who though I hate his crappy SMW flight contribution does really contribute something. The first couple zones are enjoyable, lightly, but half through Marble Ruin zone (name may be wrong, trying to purge my memory here) one already has all the emeralds so the drag really kicks in. Oddly, the Sonic 3 proponents are usually the same folk who bash Kid Chameleon as slow. You can't make speed runs in Sonic 3. And Sonic 1? It just has the better lv design, no awful Tails, no little-sister-friendly spindash, better music, better graphics, better lv design (important = counts twice), and better emerald stages. So yeah, I guess that does make it suck.

I don't think Sonic CD is BAD, really - it can be pretty fun, especially with the time attack mode, and the art design is good. The game is let down by sub-par level design. It doesn't even come close to comparing to the Genesis trilogy, so it is pretty mystifying when some people call it the "best" Sonic game.

I think it acquired a mystique of sorts from being the least-played Sonic game back in the day. A lot of people probably only played it once at a friend's house or something. I first played it at Disney World (I live in Orlando) where they had video games set up at Epcot, and I have to admit I was impressed by its unusual features. I'd speculate that a lot of people, going on fuzzy memories like this, idealized the game, which is how it became fashionable to put it above the others. Another factor is that if you actually owned a Sega CD, this might have been one of the few games you ever had for it, causing you to develop an attachment to it. I know I like Knuckles' Chaotix more than I ought to since it was all I got out of being one of the unfortunate 32X early adopters.

I think these same circumstances apply to NiGHTs's legendary status. Fortunately, that game DOES hold up, if you don't mind its shortness.
It may no longer be the `90s, but there is still time for Klax.

I hope this is sarcasm? You should try Sonic CD first for yourself, it's a really good game! And Sonic R is graphically impressive, has catchy music, and is a pretty fun take on kart racing.

I just don't even understand it when people put down S3K. I mean, it's my favorite game of all time, so I'm biased. But the level design is so deep and exploration is so rewarding. To me, it's the culmination of the exact same thing that was developing in the first two games, and it's never been touched since.

I don't understand putting down Sonic 1, 2 or 3K. Of those, Sonic 1 is my least favorite but I still think it's a great game. I admit having played Sonic 2 first made it hard to live without the spin dash!

I agree! I had lots of fun playing Sonic R BITD at demo kiosks and friend's houses. I really need to get off my ass and buy it.

I think all the first 3 Sonics are pretty great. The only thing that really "bothers" me about the first one, is the fact that each level is split into 3 stages. It just seems like they go on a bit long. I like a change of scenery. So, in the next two, the levels are only two stages, and in part 3(especially), the second stage of the level looks a good bit different from the first one.

I've read a lot of fanboys always act as if Sonic 2 is the best one. Do you think that it's just because they are kind of unaware that 3 and Knuckles are supposed to be put together to be one game? I mean, Sonic 3 just couldn't be done for the holidays. By themselves, they're sorta short. Maybe that's where people think they aren't as good. But together....it's like a beautiful Voltron like creature...uh...i'm getting a little out there... It's a good game.

Sonic CD...it's not a bad game...I just think it's weak compared to the core 3. It also baffles me about it's praise. I think it may have something to do with it being on the Sega CD...which no one had.

And oh wow..talking about nostalgia, Sonic blew me away when I first played it. I have so many memories of just thinking "this is the greatest thing ever!", when I had it. It was like the Genesis went up a number of notches in quality for me, at that point. It certainly got better, but I really do have some fond fond memories of that game.

I'll always remember when I turned it on for the first time, and it went "SEGA!". My young mind was forever touched. Some may say brain damaged though.

    Hahaha that’s true.
Have you tried turning off the vocals? The music actually becomes pretty good this way.

No, it's because of those goddamn barrels in Carnival Night Zone.

Itīs not even a pretty damn good game imo.
Granted, it is not terrible; thatīs why I said it is a bad SONIC game, implying that I compare it to that series standard. But in comparison to any other of the real Sonic games on MD, SMS and GG (not counting Sonic Blast and 3D) it is still a big letdown in quality. The level design is quite awful and you feel that not a lot of thought has been put in it. It feels like a total rushjob.

Whatīs left is a mediocre jumpīn run that doesnīt even come close to compete with the rest of the series. Just not much fun to play.

Sonic CD just had the benefit of using the Sega CD technology to some extent and impressing people with that, and the lack of competition in the genre on Sega CD.
