So, I spent more on the vinyl dye, cloth, and scratch out than I did on the game boy, lol. QuickSciFi mentioned I should boil the shell to get the paint off, but won't that warp the plastic? Also, I couldnt find a boil on dye, all they had was aerosol. Will that work?
Anyone?
Spray on Vinyl Dye should work. I've ran into a few problems, like it being easy to scratch, but I think I might have applied it incorrectly. I don't think I waited long enough between applying coats, and it may have caused the dye to build "layers" or something. At the very least it still looks great and even.
This tutorial mentions that you should wait 5 minutes between coats, so as long as you do it right, it should turn out fine. Many people have used spray on Vinyl Dye with great results.
For something like this, I would first try oven cleaner spray to strip the paint. It may or may not work; I had some success with using it to strip kid-painted Hot Wheels cars. If that didn't work, I'd just use 000 steel wool or 1500 grit wet-sand paper to smooth it out.
Boiling it may or may not work for stripping; I had tried to use this on a DVD drive faceplate and it warped like crazy, so I wouldn't suggest it. YMMV
As for the paint, if you wanted to keep it silver, I'd probably use a can of Duplicolor. There is a Toyota truck color which is remarkably simiilar to the silver used on electronics; I actually used it to paint the faceplate on a PC I rebuilt and it looks quite factory.

PS: you may be planning on this already, but you may want to test out the painting on something a bit more common before attacking the Light.![]()

I actually did some research today and found that a product called Super Clean works to strip the paint off. I picked up a quart today, along with a small bucket to soak it in. I'm also planning on using a small amount of the vinyl dye on the inside of the unit to see how it holds. If it fails, I have the can of plastikote to try.
Thanks all for the help!
I'm watching this thread with due interest! Hope it works out.

I can't wait to see how this turns out. Where did you find it for $15? This thread inspired me to dig out my GB Pocket. I have to start buying games for it again.

I found it at a local collectible store that sells vintage game systems, trading cards, movies, etc. I usually stop in on my way home from class on Saturday morning at ITT, to see if there's any good deals on systems. On the visit before this, I picked up a 3/4 Sega Model 2 for 5 bucks that works just fine. I was looking at buying a 1st generation Playstation (SCPH-1001) when I saw the GB Light sitting right between the GB color systems and the GB advance systems. It fit in so perfectly, I almost missed it. When I saw the 15.00 price tag, i figured it was for parts only, so I asked the owner about it. He powered it on and everything seemed fine so I bought it and the PS 1 right then and there.
Now if I can just get this damn paint off of it...![]()
I fucking broke it.
I was taking apart the LCD and I gently bumped the LCD panel but apparently it was enough to ruin approx. 25% of the screen, more specifically, a giant strip in the middle. So now I need a Gameboy Light screen...
Any suggestions?
Got a picture? Isn't the screen on those soldered in place? Parts for a gameboy light will be harder to find than a full gameboy.
I can get some later on today. After doing some quick research, it looks like I might be able to use a GB Pocket's LCD as a replacement...
This.
